Default Need help removing grill inserts

OK, so i've owned my truck for about a month now and am almost done ridding it of chrome. the only part left besides the wheels is the grill insert which i'm planning on replacing. I've black chromed the ram head logo's and 4x4 on the back. My question is how the heck do you get the insert out without breaking all the plastic pins/rivits that hold it on. I tried prying out two and broke them both. Do the new grills come with new pins? i'm assuming i would be reusing them..right? I'm planning on buying the black honeycomb to replace the chrome but i dont want to remove the current one until i can figure out if i'll need to do it and try to keep the clips in tack. Let me know what you guys think.. can new pins be bought anywhere? if so that'll make things allot easier.

I used a pick hook (kinda like a screwdriver) and a flat head, it's very tedious. I have takin it off twice and hadn't broken any clips yet. Just go slow, I suggest wearing a pair of gloves to keep ur fingers from getting buggered up if u happen to slip.

I looked at those and decided there was no way I was gonna try and get all those outta there. So I just bought a new grille shell with the inserts I wanted from a Dodge dealer.

Before:

During: (There's only a few nuts to remove and it's completely off)

All Done:

15 minute job. 25 minutes if ya can't find the right size socket.

Hey, can someone PM Dalton for me and ask him where he got the new fasteners he used to replace his grill insert. I dont have anough posts yet to PM. I saw this in another post yesterday..

"I removed the grill insert(not an easy task I had to drill out the origional fasteners and replace them with new ones when i put it back in)"

Thanks all,

You're doing the exact same thing as me man! I bought the parts to replace my grille months ago. I just havent had much time to replace it but when I tried my bolts were rusted so I couldnt even take it off to get the inserts out.

I got the interts out from the grille I bought to replace though and that took about 5 min using a really small screw driver. Just push the middle part of the pin all the way in and then the whole pin should just pop off. Once youve done that to all the pins the inserts should come right out.

If your trying to remove them with the grille still on the truck (which I tried) there are a few of the pins that you cant reach.

Other than that it should be pretty easy! Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. I'll try your technique. I would not have thought to push in the middle part. I've kinda put that job on the back burner now as i just bought some nerf bars that are givign me a head ache.. I broke a bolt off is the frame yesterday trying to remove one of them to attached the brackets for the nerf bars. Looks like I need to get it in the shop for that one. Oh we'll i guess thats how it goes...

BTW, i'm in huntersville, NC just north of charlotte.
