Default Towing Near Capacity

So the old man and I have been toying around with getting a small toy hauler. We've found a guy that is thinking about selling his 200? Pace Explorer RT. The trailer has all the essentials for our family in a fairly lightweight package. Untill you actually start hauling your toys.

The trailers dry weight it about 5000lbs. And then you add in 4 250lbs dirt bikes, water, gear and all . . . you could have a 7000 pound turd on your hands.

Now, my 96 short box XCab with the 5.9 will tow 7600 pounds, but you know it isn't going to like it. We've towed 7,000 lbs worth of trailer and GMC, but that was flat ground and it wasn't a walk in the park for it.

So how can I beef up my truck? I've been looking into Air bag suspension, load equalizing hitches and hopping up the truck powertrain wise for some more comfort, but i still don't know if that would get me into a safe ball park.

I know for a fact we aren't going to get good mileage. . . . hahaha

Air bags and a load equalizing hitch will work just fine for sag. I used to work at an RV dealer and had a guy pulling a 10K lb 5th wheel with his half ton Ram. We didn't advise it, but he was adamant about it, so he left with the trailer in tow (after air bags) and it sat level. I can't say anything about the power of his truck with this setup, but I assume the truck struggled. If you are mainly concerned about sag, get the helper air bags and equalizing hitch... you won't sag. I will say though, if you plan to pull it a lot, a properly setup 3/4 ton truck makes a big difference, if that's an option for you of course. Good luck.

Yeah I've been talking Cummins with my dad. He's not going for it.

In a perfect world, we'd sell my truck, our suburban and our impala, then get a Cummins for dad, Grand Caravan for mom and a Neon for me. But that's in a perfect world.

I'll keep trying though.

I don't see why you can't get him to go for the cummings. If I had the choice that's what id have. My co truck is a 24 ft. box truck that can weigh up to 36,000 lbs and it has the 5.9. Works great for a heavy non aero dynamic truck.

I'm working on it. Dad is basically on board with the idea. I've found plenty of trucks in our price range in our local area with relatively low miles (for a diesel) and they look pretty clean.

It's getting mom to give up the Suburban that's the hard part. She loves having all 9 seats for some reason. When we have 2 kids off and married and another one that's going to be married within a year here. I'm the only one that's consistently at home any more. And even then I'll be off to college next fall. She just needs a minivan to haul all the grand kids around in.
