Newb here:

1999 1500 4x4 xcab short box with NV3500 and deathflash:

Everything has been replaced at one time or another except the trans, engine and diffs. Been my wife since 2001 and my only vehicle. Moved 14 times with it and never left me stranded. Best vehicle ever. Currently over 216,000 miles and starts every day. I'm active on two other forums that are 2nd gen heavy so I know everything about these trucks (16 years is a long time). Oh, and the engine selector is wrong: the 98 and up 318s have 230hp, not 220. The 360s went up to 245hp.

1995 1500 with 318. 257,300 miles all stock. I bought it new in October 94. Changed spark plugs at 100,000. Original exhaust still on. Had to replace rear end at 184,000 because pinion gear locked up. Tranny rebuilt at 202,000. Radiator changed at 236,000. Shocks, upper and lower ball joints replaced at 249,000 along with front bearings, even though the originals were still good. Freeze plugs changed at 253,000. Changed oil every 5000 miles like clockwork. Standard 10-30 or 10-40. Pennzoil, Valvoline, QS, whatever was cheapest with Fram filter. I just put in Mobil 1 at 255,000. She's running better now than when I drove it off the lot. Think I'll keep the old girl. Just gettin' broke in good.

I own a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 3.18 CU 5.2 L V8 on it's 2nd engine and 204,933 miles. Bought it used in 2005. It consumes about a quart of oil every two weeks and 750 miles! Terrible gas mileage at 13 - 14 MPG, around 10 if I pull my boat. Puffs a small amount of blue smoke at start up. Is this a valve seal or upper and lower intake plenum issue? Looked down the throttle body today and saw oil deposits way down low. I installed an aftermarket Magnaflow Performance (supposedly) Exhaust which has a catalytic converter and an O2 sensor. I've also installed a K & N performance (supposedly) cold air intake. Two mechanics have said I've screwed the whole thing up and the OEM ECM does not know what's going on and thus I'm suffering low MPG and low HP as well as low torq. Retired and can't afford a new or slightly new truck with low miles and a $750 - $1000 monthly payment. Any way to get more HP, torq, and better MPG out of this old 318 like a performance chip or reprogrammed ECM? Gotta love the quality of American car manufacturing going on a Chrysler in the late 90"s!

1997 Ram 1500 Club Cab with 234000. I have the 318 with 5 speed manual transmission. This has been one of the most troublefree reliable vehicles I have ever owned. Still has the orignal clutch. Had rust above rear fenders. Cut the rust out, coated it and put fender flares on it. Now the rocker panels are rusted out.
Always said I was going to drive this truck until it started to nickle and dime me to death. That has not happened but yesterday I bought a 2018 Tradesman crew cab with the 3.6L. Had a great price so I bit the bullet.
Now going to sell my old one. Really hate to see it go.

After market exhaust and intakes do almost nothing on an otherwise stock engine. The engine is a pump. It has certain restrictions by design in the intake and exhaust, moderated by cam profile and inherent compression. All that is programmed into a computer fuel management algorithm. Changing exterior components without a program change is generally fraught with terrible results. Put your original air intake system back on. The exhaust might not interfere too much, depending on how back pressure is present. Too little back pressure causes problems with OBD2 due to the rear oxy sensor reporting improper catalyst efficiency. If that's the case, a stock muffler should cure the problem. The mileage you report is typical of that particular vehicle. It never will be better without radical changes in weight and or swept volume/volumetric efficiency per mile driven. Your oil puff and oil deposits are likely from valve stem seals or PCV issues. You might enhance mileage one or 2 MPG by running premium fuel. Also, add Sea Foam about every 3rd or 4th fillup to keep the injectors at their peak performance.

Better highway mileage could be accomplished by changing the rear differential ratio to a higher gear ratio, but the benefits in mileage isn't likely to pay off anytime soon. I'm planning to install an A500 overdrive into my 89 D-150 to get better highway mileage... the little V-6 just works too hard at 70 MPH. By doing that, I'll increase my swept volume per mile efficiency.

I have a 94 Dodge Ram 1500 regular cab short bed lifted 4x4. 256000 MI running strong still could use some more power could you please tell me about this throttle body mod that I've been reading about something to do with grinding something on it I have 2 and 1/2 in MagnaFlow exhaust from engine to tailpipe I tried a high-powered ignition coil but it made the truck run bad and shut down any ideas about that would be appreciated I guess it could have just been a bad coil that happens sometimes what's new stuff just looking to get it to be a little more Peppy

I have a 99 durango with the 5.2L 318. Im am in the middle of doing a transmission swap on it in my driveway. It was given to me by a friend. It has 267000 and it wasnt really taken care of. But a new water pump and ALT. And she is running fine. However when i did the last oil change im starting to smell some gas in the oil so it probably ready for new piston rings. But it still runs like a champ and i cant wait to get this transmission in today so i can hit the road again.

PS: thoughs on doing a 4X4 swap???
