While looking for a place to mount switches for my emergency response lights and gadgets, I found something I’ve never seen before, behind a panel to the left of the steering column, and just above the E-break release, is this orange strap/handle/pull cord thingy, I tried to trace where the cable ran and it seems to go towards the transmission, kinda puzzled at this and google was no help, so why I didn’t come to the Genius minds on here first is a lapse in judgment on my part, thank you in advance for any and all input

That is the transmission Park Release mechanism

Say you break down, battery is dead, the transmission is in Park & you need to move it for any reason
Once you pull that strap, the transmission shifts into Neutral

Watch this video, you don't want to break that flimsy part

Thank y’all for the information, When I seen it going towards the tranny I figured it was some sort of emergency disconnect, but that’s cool that it just takes it to “neutral”, any one know if other vehicle manufacturers are doing this or is this just a ram thing, cause that could be vital information to have for us firefighters if we need to get to a pin in and a truck is in the way

I do know that before the 8 speed transmission

The Rams had a release in the floor console
You would look at the floor shifter & just to the right of the D position, there would be a small rectangular cut out.
You would use something like a small screwdriver to pop open that cap

You can see the pink plastic parts that are hidden under that cap
If i recall correctly, you just push down on the pink plastic parts to release the Parking pawl & the transmission will then be in Neutral

RAM 2500 Shift Override with Column Shift, ( Park Over ride ) super easy to do

This car is not as easy to release from the park position

Thanks GTyankee for another great tidbit on a how to do procedure...Without thinking I would have snapped that clip in a heartbeat. Great to know I can use my key to reposition tab. Again thanks for the info.....

Even on other makes and models with electronic shifting, there is a little square or rectangle piece of plastic next to the shifter that can be removed and depressed to allow you to move the transmission into neutral; it's a manual shift lock override. You still need the key otherwise the column will be locked and you won't be able to shift or steer. I've had to use this feature before on a woman's car that had a dead battery in the middle of three lanes; I blocked traffic with my cruiser, used the override, and then shifted her car into neutral and pushed it to the side of the road.

I installed my switches in the same location, I mounted them on the outter edge so it would not interfere with the lever.

That's the neutral override for the 8 speed transmission, I thought every vehicle had one; my Durango has the exact same thing but its in the center console. The manual covers it FWIW, you can Google "2015 Ram manual" and download a PDF of your manual that you can do ctrl+F searches in since its around 1000 pages.
