Its not that they're coils, its that they are linear rather than progressive rate like leaf packs are

My 17 started ticking occasionally when it was cold, dealer told me it is normal. BS and I got rid of the truck. Hopefully they did do something about it.

I have a 2017 Ram with 10,600 miles and it started the cold start tick. Going to the dealer for the 2nd time next week along with a case number from Chrysler customer care. Hopefully they can get it resolved. My tick goes away after 10 sec of cranking. I won’t keep it if this continues.

HEMI in my 13 Challenger ticks (when cold) and it still runs like a raped-ape. Same with the 16 RAM. This is not a big deal...a well-known feature of the HEMI.

It sure wouldn't call that a "feature", it is more like a design flaw. No engine should do that, the lubrication system and lifters should be designed in a way that there is no lifter bleed down.

My 16 makes a bit of ticking whenever it feels like it.
It's annoying, but it seems to have good oil pressure and no performance issues. I brought it in to have it checked out a few months back and there was nothing found. No motor issues and no broken manifold bolts. I may consider running synthetic on my next oil change since it's almost camping season again, which means more work for the truck.

The engine runs great, lots of power, by all accounts, folks are getting many many reliable miles out of it. How is a small tick when the engine is cold a problem? This reminds me of a guy on the Challenger forum who's all honked off because the "Auto" function on the power windows only works when they go down, not when they go up. At some point, you gotta let the little stuff go.

If it bothers you that much you can spray down your engine bay with DEET. Should rid you of these little buggers:
