Yea, but if that happened, people would start screaming about burning up trannies with the V10.....just like they did when the gen 2s first had the V10s.

But seriously, it is interesting how they're getting so much more HP out of the 6.4L compared to the old 8.1L. Around 90 more HP than the V10, but around 50 ft/lbs less torque.

Since I got my Ram I've been wanting one of these bad. There was a super pristine 2000 quad cab 4x4 with the 5 speed and the 488 for sale a little over a year ago about 2 hours from here, but I wasn't in a good financial position to move on it at the time.

Someday though! I have seen a lot of these engines over 300,000 miles so they should be available for years to come.

I specifically do not want a Cummins; I want my 2nd gen to be a 10 banger!

Its actually an entirely different engine other than maybe plug wires and displacement. I guess layout and number of cylinders too.
I'll give ya a holler when I put mine up for sale.

Aww come on, the 8.1L is a Chevy V8

The most impressive thing to me about the 10 isn't the peak numbers, its that the 450 lb-ft comes on at only 2400 RPM. That's serious low end grunt and its not a diesel and has no turbo.

A Hemi 10 would make close to 500 HP at the same HP/liter as the 5.7. The 8HP70 only holds 516 lb-ft so they'd need a different transmission.

Also, it would need to be odd firing; Dodge V10s have always been odd-firing because they don't use split crank pins like Ford V10s. It gives them a distinct sound

I will be moving back to the good side of the Mississippi soon, but Oregon is still a drive. I think I may have a wedding to go to this December though

Funny that you should joke about the 8.1 being a chevy. Before we bought the V10 back in 2000, our hauler was a mid 80s GMC 454. That sucker would always get 8mpg...whether it was empty or hauling.....lol.

And yea, the low rpm grunt that the V10 has is quite impressive.

A Hemi10 would truly be wild. And a TON of fun, I bet!

Yep I really like my 6.4 for towing, pretty good low rpm torque and flat torque curve, but oooh boy a 6.4 based v10. now were talkin.

Talking about the old odd fire v10 brings back memories, in those days there was no misfire monitor on the v10s.
Made diagnosing a misfire kind of challenging, 1 dead cylinder you couldn't really even tell by driving it, couldn't really tell by how they sounded either, they sounded weird when they were running on all 10.
I never towed with one, but guys that did really liked them.

One of my neighbors used to build hot rods, and he came over one afternoon and wanted to see the V10. Opened up the hood and he was like, 'wow, that thing is massive!' And then I fired it up and he was like....'WTH??? It sounds like a 4 cylinder...it is so quiet and docile sounding'....I just chuckled. The stock V10 is a unique sounding beast, that's for sure. Only time I get any sort of indicator on the size of the engine is when I do a fast pass on the hwy....starts to sound like a screaming maserati up around 80 mph at high rpms.

That's why I really enjoyed that exhaust mod that that poster here did to his old V10....with the 4" end part of the exhaust......and then the video....made the V10 sound sooooo much better.

And yea, everything I am reading here on the boards is that the 6.4L does really good with towing, especially with the 4.10 rear end. I am quite sure that I will be very pleased with it.

I was selling these when they introduced the t300 body. Loved it right then. Have owned 3. A 96 2wd auto ext long bed, 97 4x4 ext manual long bed and my current unicorn- a pristine 2003 quadcab slt 4x4. 90k mi 4.10 w/dsa. 17mpg if i can keep it 55-60(i cant so its more like 13) have towed 20000#. Not a racehorse-its a clydedale! But even towing whatever i want-wheels or not, i get 8-10 at the worst. I absolutely love it and the torque. I think it hits 420lb ft at about 800 rpm if i remember correct. I have had 4000# of block in the bed and it only squatted 3". And it is much more reliable than my buddy's 6.0 ford!
