I have a 1997 Ram 5.9L automatic 2wd. My transmission gave out I have no drive or reverse and makes a terrible sound if I put it in gear.

I'm being told by a transmission garage and a scrap yard that I would need a transmission from a 97 ram and only from a 97 ram will work. Is this true? From what I've seen looks like they used the same transmission from 95-02 but I could be wrong. I haven't found anything telling me that the 97 is exclusive to the 97.

OBD11 started in 1996. you need a tranny from 96 thru probably 2001, due to solonoid and relay control vs hydraulic control (OBD1) I am 99.5% certain of this... 3/4 and 1 tons may be different.

That's what I was thinking based on the research I did. Who would have though a dishonest garage!
