So, after recently purchasing my first Ram truck (2002 5.9 Magnum) and not doing a thorough job of checking things out (price was really great), I find an interesting issue. Only when backing up, usually backing up an incline, the truck belts out a substantial amount of WHITE smoke. Plus, there is a heavy amount of burning oil odor. This only happens in reverse. Even when I rev the engine to high rpms, or just accellerating from a stop or down the highway, there is never any visible smoke. The only other issue I can find is the bolt that holds the KN air cover onto the throttle body has broken off where it screws into the throttle body. I will extract that soon enough. The smoke while backing up bothers me, otherwise the truck runs out just fine...

Help?

Sounds like you've got some oil getting in to the combustion chamber, but from where? I'm thinking you're gonna have to take the intake off and check. If there no sign of oil there... wait a minute... do you have a catch can? If no catch can, then if there's no sign of leakage in the intake, the heads come off next. Someone else will hopefully chime in with something else. But for now, that's all I can think of.

Catch can

Thanks Rodger. I do not think there is a catch can on the truck. I will take a look down the throttle body to see if anything is pooling there, but honestly I am thinking there could be an issue with the 4wd works. Probably need to have someone else back it up while I get under there and take a look...
