I have a 2004 ram 1500 quad cab hemi 5.7 4x4
the truck did not come with nerf bars on it. if I buy a set will I have to have brackets welded on? or drill holes in the frame?

I'm pretty sure that most aftermarket nerf bars are made to be bolt on.

My aftermarket nerf bars came with everything I needed, No welding or drilling holes. I don't quite know about older trucks. You could always try and get the instruction manuals from the brand you are thinking of to see how they are installed.
