okay so I have 2005 Durango and when you start it up it makes a knocking nose, it only last about 1 to 4 minutes. we just bought it from a used car dealership. but we are working on the road and cant get it to the shop. we are "oversize load" escorts, heading to Pennsylvania. Oh it can be anything! If it only last 1-4 minutes then it's probably just some valvetrain noise, which is normal. If you can bring it to the dealership and tell them to fix it.

Just gave it an oil change, the other day. Used Royal Purple! it still makes the noise, it does it every time you start it up. even on a hotter day... and like i said, we are working and cant take it to the dealer till we get back to Oklahoma.... on our way to Pennsylvania which will take us about 4 more days, then 2 days possibly 3 to get home depending on the weather. it runs great! has a lot of get up and go. its a V8 and gets 22 miles to the gallon! plus it has like 25 more horse power than our Ram 1500. i love my new Durango!!!!!!

If this is every startup, hot or cold then I'm with ramvan2500. There are a lot of components that can make a knocking noise, and without actually hearing it, everything is pretty much speculation. If it has a sticking lifter, that wouldn't surprise me a bit. Nice part is that it always does it, so the dealer will no problem 'duplicating the symptom'.

Now that you have switched to Royal Purple, it is 'possible' that the issue may go away on it's own. Sometimes parts start to stick due to improper maintenance, and a change to a proper schedule with good products can affect sticky parts. :4-dontknow:

It just might be valve train, it actually isn't uncommon!
Overtime atleast I noticed with the Magnum engines is that the rocker arms loosen a little, this is why they instituted hydraulic lifters because it has a little piston that pushes up on the push rod to keep it at zerolash. However overtime the rocker arm loosens enough that is can sometimes oscillate a little.

Now that is just a thought, I too have suffered a little knock noise but it was faint more like a tick and it was just some sticky valve train parts, after so many oil changes it went away. I did have a knock that I thought was the engine after I rebuilt my transmission but it was just some loose torque converter bolts. Like said their are so many things that can cause a knock like noise, even a missing bolt on the fan shround can cause a knocking noise.

But as long as the knocking noise doesn't increase in frequency and intensity when you increase engine RPM's then it's less worry.

What's the mileage on it? Does it sound like it's a knock from deep down or near the upper part of the engine? Can it be heard more on one side of the engine? Is this knock of a deeper tone or higher pitch?

it has 165,000 miles, and now that we have the royal purple in it, it is not as prominent. not really sure if it is in one part or another...

In that it was reduced with fresh oil tends to make me think your rod bearings are worn. It take a few minutes for thermal expansion and oil to take up what slack it can and reduce the noise.
