Hi all. if this should be posted in a better spot, sorry, please move my post.

My truck just returned from a trip from Toronto to NC and back two weeks ago. It ran fine on the trip through the mountains and a lot of off-roading,but the transmission has developed a little whine. Shifts paper smooth, great mileage, levels cool, just a little whine. Took the pan off, cut the filter open,all was clean and fluid was clear like new si was the magnet. It developed the whine on the way down and has yet to escalate even in the daily stop and go in the two weeks i've been back. Really wouldn't be to stressed but have the trip planned again in June this time pulling my 6500lbs RV.

Any thoughts ?

Hate to ask the obvious but are you sure it's the tranny and not the rear end? Does your truck have the LSD? Rear diff problems aren't extremely uncommon on third gen trucks with the LSD.

Sound is from the front. Mainly noticeable while accelerating and changes with the speed and gears. At cruising speed 50-60mph really hard to notice, as when cruse decelerating down through the gears to slow speed. Seems only really prevalent when in city driving, highway less so.

whine only in certain gears - hard to tell
Does it vary with engine speed - yes
on the gas - yes
accelerating - yes
decelerating - no
cruising steady speed - no, i think

OK, if it changes with engine speed, then it shouldn't be anything from the trans output back (like rear axle). If you rev the engine up in Park or Neutral, can you hear it? If whine is from the front, and varies with engine speed, then I'm thinking engine accessory drive (power steering pump, alternator, etc.). Maybe you could have someone listen (with hood open) while revving the engine (not too much!) in Park, to try to pinpoint where it's coming from.

Park or neutral - no whine.
Took it into the garage last afternoon as i have some time this week to be without the truck. I will keep you updated as i get word. At this point looking like tanny pump got noisy. Should be coming apart today.

FWIW i said i would update so here i go.

Tranny got pulled apart and inspected yesterday. No real failures just used. Seems the torque converter will be replaced as it was the source of the whine. Plan is to replace other easy components while its open with heavier duty (bushings/seals or something like that, i'm not a gear head) parts. Will increase fluid pressure for firmer hold in shifts, so i'm told. $2000 seems a lot for a whine when all still appeared to work fine but cant risk a problem when a long ways from home with my travel trailer so going to bite the bullet. I'm having a temp. gauge installed and may get a chip for added bit of pulling power

I was told the rest of the truck is solid so may hold onto the truck another year then look at the just revealed 2013.

Mine had a slight whine before I had it rebuilt and it had the same whine after so don't be surprised if it's still there. I had my pump and solenoids replaced, (not rebuilt) so i was really not expecting it to come back but it did. Still no answer to what is causing it either but the truck drives well so I am not too worried. It sounds like it's coming up thru the floor boards right above the tranny. I have completely rebuilt the motor and tranny and it's still there.

I also had my torque converter replaced and opted for a beefed up towing version. Since you are towing a trailer, it might be wise that you do so as well. It cost me $400 to upgrade to a HD converter that will take the load and heat better.

Update !

Been driving the truck around all week and it sounds great. Replaced torque converter and pump and had a higher pressure kit put in for towing. Had a lot of little things replaced as well but was most interested in general wear which showed all was clean and and apparently looked like new.

The whine was apparently from the torque converter.

As nothing was closed to failure it hurts to spend the $, but peace of mind while towing the RV out of country is worth it.
