2012 Ram Crew Cab Sport with Alpine System.


I had two JL W3's, with an Alpine 550 Mono amp, and an A-trend dual ten box installed today. I should be wowed considering I loved my JL W0's, but I have to say it sounds like Sh#t. Really muddy sound with a slight echo, and my subs are peaking in SQ at very low volumes. My only guess is that it has to be the box? Or, is my factory radio hindering my sound quality?

does the box have the correct internal volume? and the correct port size?(if ported)

When I installed a pair of kicker 12's with a Polk 880 amp, it also sounded crappy --- It had a new Alpine head unit too. My guess is it's the box

New Box

I took it back to the installer and he let me try W3s and they sounded worse than the W1s (not enough amp). So he gave me my money back on the Box and I went and got a trusty ole ProBox. It will be here tomorrow, and it has the perfect CuF 0.60 and I need 0.55 for W1 10s. I have read some threads where people swear by them and some prefer a fox-box. My last box in my S-10 was a ProBox hatch and I loved it. Another installer told me that the Dodge's are the worst sounding trucks period, he said I mite never be happy with it???

That installer is a joke then. The truck has nothing to do with it unless there isn't enough cabin gain, which you don't have to worry about. Sounds like it was a crappy box.

I have never heard a pro box in our trucks, but I have heard them in other applications and they were awesome. I have the fox box in my truck and couldn't be happier. Hope everything works out for you brother!

Good news for you...the Atrend box you started out with is close to the worst box on the planet...it's probably worth $10 and is made by the lowest bidder..period!
You can only go UP from there. W3's are great SQ subs but they need to be in a well built, appropriately sized box AFTER sub displacement.
I wouldn't go back to the shop where the guy said Dodge Rams are the worst sounding trucks period....first he could not be farther from the truth, secondly, that's the most unprofessional statement you could make to a customer

I also have an a trend box. I got it real cheap used. At first it sounded muddy and no tone whatsoever. I then went to Walmart and bought a cheap bag of polyfil. Unbelievable the difference it made. My sub hits hard and low now. Its incredible the difference it made. If your stereo shop doesn't know that cheap easy trick then find a new shop to deal with.

Sub Frustration

Ok, so the box sounds a lot better, but the subs are peaking way sooner than they should. My next obstacle in the way, I believe is the factory radio.

If I have the radio at very low volumes (12-15) I can turn the bass knob on my Alpine amp up about a third of the way, but with the knob all the way off and the bass @ (-9) I can only go to about (22-25) volume and they break down.

It is so annoying I don't even want to listen to it. I had 12 W0's and they handled everything I threw at them, and not once did they feel over worked. Please Help.... Is it just bc they are 10's, factory amp,radio????

I going to order all new gear this week; new deck, four new door speakers, and two sets of tweeters. All four doors off of a four channel amp, and four tweets off of the head unit bypassing all the factory Garb. I hope this make my subs happier. If the bass doesn't change I'm going to have to find another solution. All input is greatly appreciated ; )

Try tapping the speaker output right after the head unit and before the amp? There are a few guys that put up color codes.. ... See it u can get a clear signal... If not do you have a l2ci converter?.... eBay it and see if it can help.... If you don't have a converter or a clean signal BEFORE the stock amp you are then amping an already amped signal. Results shit sounding signal. That's what I would do... I'm looking to do mine soon and have been doing a lot of reading....
