Hey guys just installed the duralast 180 stat on my 2014 ram 1500 with 8 spd. I'm just trying to see what temps everybody is getting after the swap and what fan settings on the trinity they are using. I'm seeing 185 at idle and about 186-188 with normal to half throttle driving. fan settings are 195*, one thing I did notice with the trinity that is confusing me is when you go to the fan settings it says "cooling fans AC OFF" then you click on it it has to options to adjust "high MPH HS on" and "low MPH HS on" I have them set to 195* but I was under the expression when it says off that's where you set the temp for the fans to shut off at?? And then the other fan setting option is "cooling fans AC ON"
When you choose that it come up with "HS fan ON" I was assuming this is where you set the temp for them to go ON?? Any one that could point me in the rigjt direction on the settings would be great


I also noticed my trans temp are much higher then they where on my 6 speed I'm getting 176* at idle 180-183* normal driving what is everyone with the 8 speeds getting

AC "on" or AC "off" is not the fan on/off setting
it's whether the AC is turned on or turned off...not the fan.

another thing people often misread when they see high speed and low speed,
it relates to the speed the vehicle is moving, not the fan speed.
(it's only a 1 speed fan)

For all settings 10º over your T-stat open temp is correct.


The ZF8 speed trans is designed to operate at over 190º
and even has a heater to ensure it reaches that temp.

Normal operating temp for the 5/6 speed is 130º-160º while you're rolling
it will go higher if your sitting idling in park as the pump does not operate in high pressure mode when stopped in park.

Mike the later model 6 speeds have a tranny thermostat,and operate noticably higher in temp then the earlier 6 speeds.
2012's and newer 6 speeds usually operate at around 190 or higher.
My 13 used to run at 201F on tranny temp before i removed the thermostat,it now runs in the 140 to 165F range.

If you look through the grill on 2012's and newer you'll see an aluminium block that the tranny lines run into,with the number 55111005AC on it,that's the thermostat controlling tranny temps.

I removed mine as i didn't like my tranny temps running constantly over 200 degree's.

Rick, I don't "think" that's what the OP is saying at all
Sounds like he had a 12' that ran a normal 140º-150º range

Traded it in on a 14' with an 8 speed and is concerned about seeing much higher numbers.
The 8 speed is supposed to run Hotter , significantly higher than his old 12' (not a 13')

if he's saying 176-183 in his 8spd is MUCH higher than he's used to seeing. I told him why
and to expect as high as 190º+ and not to freak out.

This document clearly states the 8HP is such an efficient transmission there is a need for an auxiliary heater to keep the transmission oil at the proper temperature, about 80ºC (176ºF)

Not sure if they put the same thing on your 13' 6 speed,
but its definitely on the 8 Speed, and it draws heat from the engine heat exchange system coolant lines.
So I think I'd leave that stock to avoid a failure that is not covered under warranty.

I imagine those 8speed transmissions are not cheap to replace.

Ok thanks guys looks like everything is good then and I was just making sure I had every thing set rigjt on my fan settings too
