At approx 10,000 miles I started having problems filling with gas, I took it to my dealer and they ordered a new gas tank, saying the vent was bad in the original one. This worked great for about another 10,000 miles. At that point I could only get a few ounces in before it splashed bank and the nozzle cut off. I took it back to the dealer and they said my fill neck was faulty. The ordered one and I waited. I got on line and asked and someone mentioned trying to fill with the engine running. I tried that and it would fill but slowly. I took it back and they replaced the fill tube. When I drove it off the lot I went about 1/2 mile to a gas station. It still would not take gas fast enough to lock the nozzle to wash my windshield. I filled it slowly and went on home. Today I was at about 1/2 tank so I thought I would try a local station. Same results, it would not even fill with the engine running today. Is anyone else having this problem. I called my dealer back today and they were going to call Chrysler truck division and see if they had any ideas. My dealer has always loaned me something to drive but this is getting old. I have had squealing brakes that have been replaced twice also. Beginning to think I got a lemon.

Unfortunately a recall is for a safety issue, which this is not...so no chance for a recall.

Nothing stops you from working on your truck but that is not going to put liability on anybody but you, including Stellantis.

RAM will fix the issue. You have to take it in for them to to work on it. If it is under warranty you will not have to pay as much as if it isn't.

Depending on how vehicles have this issue RAM will either continue to fix the issue for the small % of trucks that have this issue or put some money into R&D to change the design to reduce/eliminate this issue, whichever costs less.

No chance my self or other people that by dodge trucks will purchase another dodge if dodge is not gonna stand behind its product this is a costly issue that should not be put on the customers go back to the normal tanks and fills if you complexed tanks have issues . Not happywith dodges decision and i hope other purchasers feel the same way .

Mine is a 5th gen but the same year. Here's what has been done to mine (problem started with every fill-up now is only occasionally):

Dealership replaced the filler neck - improvement for about 6 months.

Dealership replaced the tank - only have an issue (shuts off a couple of times during fillup) on occasion.

Mine seems to more troublesome if I go below 1/4 tank. I usually don't let it go below that but every now and then I get below 1/8 tank before I fill up...and that's when I have the most issue.

I never top off as that adds risk of putting fuel in the evaporator system and clogging the filter which can cause even more problems.

@ramcares I have a RAM 1500 Classic and have had issues with fueling for several months now. I have tried everything I can think of and it looks like it might be an issue with the gas tank and/or charcoal filter. I don't have the money to go through the dealership. Are there parts I can replace on my own without having to start with the most expensive thing 1st? If you are able to point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated. It only allows me to pump anywhere from 1-2 gallons at a time. I have to wait 4 seconds and then pump some more. I've tried putting the nozzle in at different angles. I have tried going to the gas station at different times of the day. I have tried to look and make sure nothing looks kinked. I am not finding that it has anything to do with temperature. I live in Arkansas and it's warm most of the year here. It takes me almost 20 minutes just to fill up my tank. Let me know if you need more info. Thanks in advance.

Hey there,

At this time, without a dealership diagnosis, there isn't much we can do to assist you. We rely on our dealers as our eyes and ears on the ground. If you decide to take your vehicle to your local dealer, we'd be happy to get you connected to a case manager who can step in and assist you.

I have an 18 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the cap less filler and have found both in person and on a Jeep forum that if you turn the filler 90* to 180* that I can fill to the full mark. If I try regular position it clicks off right away. I have seen people spend all kinds of money on the Jeep side and still not have success. For now I will turn the nozzle.

I also have a Jeep Grand Cherokee with the capless filler and have to turn the gas pump nozzle from the normal 6:00 position to about a 1:00 position to prevent the nozzle from constantly clicking off.

Sounds like you did get a lemon. I am having a problem filling my tank, dealership said I need a new fuel tank. I have warranty that covers the fuel tank but does not cover the fuel tank vent valve. Can the deal replace the whole tank due to the fuel tank vent valve not working?

Same thing here. I had the filler neck replaced, my evap system checked. purge valve checked , fuel lines blowen out. Nothing worked. I went to super America station yesterday it fueled with the truck running. It may be the large fueler nozzles at certain stations. Still this should not be happing it is a manufacturer defect and ram is ignoring it. I'm waiting fot a class action suit to happen i will definitely join it.

Yes, I'm having the same issue and it got so bad that I only got 7 gallons of gas and left. It told my about 15 minutes to do that.

I just had my tank replaced on my 2019 Ram , 1065 $. Dealer said they think there may be a recall since they are replacing a lot of them

There won't be a recall unless it's a safety issue. Until it causes a fire or someone gets hurt that's not going to happen.

There is a STAR Case for the filler neck for the early 5th gens like yours - STAR Case S1914000002.

That only helped for about 6 months then the problem came back. Dealership replaced my tank and all was good. I don't have any paperwork for the truck any more since I sold it so don't know what the TSB number was.

Next step was to replace parts of the evaporator system. I'm sure lots of people need this since I see everybody topping off when they fill up around here. I can't bring myself to go past the click as I can visualize fuel getting into the evap system and trashing my canister. When I had a diesel there was no evap system so I could keep going until I saw fuel bubbling up into the filler neck.

I just checked the NHTSA’s entire TSB list for 2019 5th Gen Ram 1500 fuel system documents. They only have the mis-filed 4th Gen TSB that I had linked to above. However they don’t show any STAR bulletins at all under gas fuel system documents. No recall documents for this problem either.

After after one call to Chrysler , a visit to the dealership, and another follow-up called a Chrysler care, I dropped my truck off literally this afternoon for them to start repairing it tomorrow. For free one beneficial caveat is that this is like my eighth Chrysler vehicle and I am under 50,000 miles on it. Not for long. That’s gonna go over this year but for this situation, I’ve had multiple vehicles and I’m under the typical mileage threshold

@ramcares I just bought a 2019 RAM Classic also. Very first time trying to fill it up it took 22 minutes to get 10 gallons. The local dealership here is not very helpful, and said it was the "charcoal filter" that needed replaced...for $1000. They then said if that doesn't work they will probably have to replace the fuel pump. It appears they are trying to avoid the actual problem and just keep charging me for different things. By reading these comments, it appears that will just put me right back in the same spot in 6-12 months. Truck only has 44,000 miles. Any advice?

I have an 18 sport…this issue is common on 18s… and got progressively worse over the past couple of years. First it seemed like it was only certain nozzles, as I could go to good old pump #5 at my local chevron. I could get about 20 bucks in then it would start clicking off as if full. Soon after…maybe 6 months, it didn’t matter where I went or what pump I used. 3 bucks…. Click. For awhile now, I top up when it gets down to 3/4 because I don’t want to stand there for half an hour filling it. During this time I cleaned out the already clean evap canister vent right beside fill tube, check the lines the best I could, removed the evap hose and blew into it. Not clogged. And replaced the fill tube, which was already the upgraded tube 🥴.Nothing helped. And I don’t believe my evap canister is nfg. I read every now and then about the tank being the problem but I avoided it. Then I noticed someone put up the tsb for the tank. This crap started before my warranty ended but I hate the dealer so much I sat on it. I’m a Kenworth tech so I understand in some ways why people don’t like dealers, mind you car dealers are much worse. Anyway I just received my new tank 68323675ac and new fuel pump ring 55366298aa and I’ll be swapping tanks this Saturday. Put it this way…. If you already have the new version of the fill tube, then from all the stories I’ve read, it will certainly be the tank, unless you’re one of those people who keeps topping up after it is full. Then maybe it’s your evap canister.
My current tank has two numbers. The one embossed on the bottom of the tank is 68323672aa and the sticker on the rear of the tank says 68320503ac. 🤷‍♂️. Apparently the roll over valve on the new one (68323675ac) is bigger and won’t get stuck like the other pos. If you have warranty, don’t be dummy like I was and leave it. Emissions coverage will not cover a fuel tank after your warranty ends. I’ll update after this Saturday.

I have a 2018 outdoorsman. Same issue people are describing here. Spent $100 to have the dealer do a diagnostic. Dealer ran hose tests. Says no kink. Their conclusion is that it must be a failed valve on tank. Not sure how they determined this. They are saying the only fix is to replace the whole tank. $1800. @ramcares does this sound right? Could there be other issues? So many people have this issue, it seems like a design flaw. If it is a known point of failure, why not own it, develop loyalty, and design an easy switch out?

The dealership will follow the corporate process. The shop manual troubleshooting process is:

1. Filler neck. If that is suspect replace it. If not then...

2. Gas tank. There's a valve on top of the tank (rollover valve?) that is the next suspect. It is incorporated into the tank so the only way to replace it is to replace the tank. If that doesn't fixt it then...

3. The evaporator system. I'm not sure where they start with this one (charcoal canister maybe) as I did not get that far in my repair.

I had the fill issue. There was a TSB for the filler neck on my '19 5th gen so they replaced it with the "updated" design.

That worked for 6 months then the issue came back. Dealership replaced the tank (bad valve) and all was good.

I don't know how many have gone into #3 but I've only read of a few that went that far to get the issue fixed.

If you are a chronic over-filler (top off after the pump auto shut-off for that little bit extra or to round off the dollar amount) then there's a good chance you've got moisture in your evaporator system and fouled your charcoal canister.

2022 Ram 1500 here. Waiting on a new gas tank. I can't tell you how disappointing it is to have a two year old new vehicle with an issue like this. I'm hoping they save my old tank because if they come back and tell me it the canister, I'm gonna want my old tank back. C'mon Ram, that's not how you get repeat business.

They won't let you keep any of the parts they remove for warranty repairs, to me that is complete BS !!! We paid for those parts and the repair parts are free under warranty, that is another reason I got into it with the service manager over some other warranty work on my truck that I didn't allow them to do because they wouldn't give me back the parts they took off .... I wonder why ? lol ...Let this also sink in

#83 ·
Not the parts they take off .... We have payed for those parts, every single part that has been on your vehicle .... Think about it , but seems like you are already influenced by how they seem to think ...

"Corporate" has agreed or been told they have to perform these warranty fixes right? At no charge ! lol ...

But it's ok, when they agreed to fix my filler neck tube on my truck under warranty, they supposedly replaced the part, I looked down there and they never replaced it with a new one, I know for a fact because I marked the old one and the same old part number was still there, I have the receipt which shows that they replaced something they never even put their hands on ...

So that is exactly why they won't give you back the parts, because probably 95% or more of the time they never actually even replace parts and keep your vehicles for days even weeks or months ....
