Has anyone test drove to compare the 3.55 vs. 3.92 ? I just picked mine up yesterday and I have the 3.55 (It's kinda tough to find one with the 3.92). Anyway, I love the truck and couldn't be happier so far but, I guess I was just wondering.
BTW, I decided to put the Q. here rather than in drivetrain because it is a performance question.
this all also depends on your tire size your going with on this but overall long run everday driver going with the 3.55 gears is your best friend because everyone here know's how well dodges do on gas mileage lol but my truck has 4.10 gears front and back so you know how mines doing, but it will tow a house down
I have the 3.92 rear end with the 5.7L and I like so far. My father has an '02 with 4.7L I think he just has the 3.55 rear end, and my brother has an '04 5.7L, but I'm not sure if his a 3.55 or 3.92... My brother also has a K&N CAI and dual flowmaster exhaust system... My uncle has an '06 and says he gets better than my brother, which could be due to the MDS obviously. I average 14.5L/100KM mostly highway.. and can't get any better than that... but city/hwy combined I sit around 16-17L/100KM, which really depends on how heavy my foot is during that tank. Now take into respect, I am getting my numbers from the OHC... My dads '02 has nothing done to it, straight stock.. and I think he averages about 16.5L/100KM so, you tell me where its at??
Hey Danstona! Where abouts are you in ontario? I am in Brampton, and I frequent Mississauga quite often. I drive an 05 black ram, with two silver stripes, and 22" five spoke chrome rims! Would be pretty cool if you saw me around or something!
I'm actually out Kitchener way more, I rarely travel to Mississauga though. I may be out in Milton for a few days to do some training for a temp position if they ever let me know when and where! Be nice to work and not be on the EI for a while. I'll keep my eyes peeled for your truck. There isn't much that separates mine from other Hemi Sports, except I have a chrome bug grille now, and smoke front licence plate cover... oh, and my licence plate says "DANSTONA" go figure!
I just picked up a 2010 Ram 1500 Laramie with the 3.92 rear and I was originally worried about how my fuel mileage would be. I have only had it for 800 km's but in that period have averaged 13.8L/100km city and highway, far better than anticipated. I looked high and low for a truck with the 3.55 gears because I am on the road quite a bit for work. Definitley not dissappointed with the 3.92 gears and would be surprised if the 3.55 were that much better on fuel at all. The cylinder shutoff feature makes a huge difference and drops down to four at 120kmh. I am curious as to what numbers a 2010 with 3.55 is running... anyone?
I'd have to check what my father has for gears in his 2010 Sport, but I doubt they are the 3.55s... he averages around the same as what you mentioned if I do recall.
Well i have the 2010 3.7 v6 with the 3.92 rear and at 85 mph from miami to orlando at just before half a tank i had 228 miles on just 19 gallon fill up is that good or bad??
That is the real need for you if running the Hemi. I like my 3.55's but it would light up the right rear tire from a light at the slightest provocation, also fun at boat ramp pulling bass boat out of water. I had dealer bolt in the MOPAR trac-loc and retain my stock 3.55 gears, now it is the best possible for me.
Not sure if (or why not?) you could order one with 3.55 and trac-loc... The 3.92 trucks seems to have it standard with that gearing.
If you agree, try to get dealer to install trac-loc with your new truck and its 3.55 gears...

I have an 09 slt crew with the 4.7 and 3.55's and 20" wheels and get around 15-16 mpg in the summer. It drops to 11-13 in the winter. If i change my truck to 3.92's or even 4.10's i would. In my opinion the 3.55's bog it down too much.
^^^ i have the 3.55's with my 4.7 as well, and i also feel like it's just too bogged down. 3.73's don't seem like they'd do much for me, but i'm afraid 3.92's would be too much... also 3.92's aren't easy to find for an '02 1500..
9.25 corp rear? If so then 3.92 should be easy to find since folks sell thier oem 3.92 when they regear. Unless you are narrowing your search to local area only.
Delivery Mileage 2709 miles.
Current Mileage 8889 miles.
Over 6180 miles its gotten a worst of 18.3 US MPG (12.85 Liters per 100 km) and a best of 20.9 US MPG (11.25 Liters per 100 km). The majority of the tanks are in the 19's (12 Liters per 100 km). All mpg is hand calculated as it doesnt have EVIC.
PS the Limited Slip 3.55 Combo became available on Regular Orders with the introduction of the Tradesman. I believe its always been available as a Fleet Order. If you are installing a limited slip in an existing truck with the 9.25 the Eaton Detroit Truetrac is a better option. Its a stronger, torque biasing, gear driven (no clutches to wear out and no friction modifier required), and more effective. Unlike a locker its very streetable. If you are buying a 2012 with the new rear end you will have to go with the factory limited slip as its the only game in town as of now.
I am guessing you do a good bit of highway driving.
I have 3.55s in my truck. I wish I had the 3.92s. There are so decent size hills where I drive and I driver about 80% in the city. If I mainly drove on the highway I am sure I would love the 3.55s that much more. I am thinking about a regear though.
ok guess ill jump in running a little late on the post but any way i had 3.55 open with the 5 speed with 17s steelies went to 06 20s and it went from a slug to a super slug so i changed to 4.56s with posi and have been running them for about 4yrs now and love them. they turn my 24s with no problem
Hello All,
Could anyone tell me what I should expect to pay to install limited slip on a 2012 with from a ontario dealer? I thought it was included with the 3.92 gear.
I am looking into one of the new 2012 ram express 1500 quad cab 4x4. i cant find much about it. i have found that apparently it seems to only come with the 3.55 gears. this doesnt impress me much. i would really like the 3.92. i dont honestly know how big of a difference it is, can anyone give me any insite on this express and maybe how much difference in the pulling and fuel mileage theyre suppose to have. i see that the express is suppose to have upgraded shocks and what not. what is this truck set up to do? i have found them for 27k and some change. this seems awefully cheap for what is suppose to be an upgraded truck underneath. i am not at all worried about fancy shit inside, but if there is a big difference in something please let me know. thanks a lot for any help.

You can get the express with 3.92, I know someone who did. If I was getting one, I'd get 3.92, but if you get 3.55 it's not horrible. My brother has a 3.55 express and it's still fast. Where did you read the express had better shocks and was "upgraded". This is definitely not the case. The express is the cheapo truck with a big engine and color matched fascias, it's basically an ST, base model with standard hemi and a few sporty upgrades. You can pay and upgrade some things, but only to an extent.
I just picked up my new 2013 Outdoorsman 1500 quad w/ 5.7 hemi, 3.92 gears and 8 speed. Have less than 200 miles on it. Definitely scoots, as for mileage....really too early to tell, but averaging 14 right now. 8 Speed with dial shift is really different and takes some getting used to (traded in 2012 1500 bighorn).
Ok so maybe some help to make a decision? I am looking to purchase a new 1500 crew.
I have a shot at a big horn edition with 3.55 and 30k 2010
or a 1500 express 2012 with 3.92 and 9k & 5.7 and crew. The 12 has less stuff on the inside like chrome accents and driver information center in the dash but basily the same. The 12 has a dual air scoop hood, i like this more but not sure which would be considered the "better" one. 3000.00 dif between the 2. so not a huge jump in price?
thoughts? advice? I like both hard to decide.
please feel free to give your opinion either way.
I have an 02 4.7 with the 3.92 and an 03 5.7 with the 3.55.
Really hard to compare the two as my hemi is much stouter from the line and will definitly top end the 4.7.
I used to own an 02 4.7 with 3.73 gearing and it was just an all around turd.
Overall all I think its fair to conclude the 4.7 with a 3.92 is the way to go if you cannot go with a 5.7. I have yet to find anything I could not do with my 5.7 and 3.55 besides get better fuel economy. I cannot imagine a 5.7 with 3.92 or worse yet 4.10 gearing. I know most people do not buy trucks for fuel economy, but it still is frustrating sitting at the pump....
As true as that is, when you daily drive your truck getting 9-12 mpg it is a tough reality compared to the newer much more fuel efficient breed of trucks.
All the new trucks are being built for both..fuel economy and capabilities and power.
