I'm trying to learn how to properly use 4WD. I drive a 2010 Crew Cab SLT with three transfer case options; 2WD, 4WD Lock, and 4WD Lo. I've done a bit of research and am more confused than when I started. What does 4WD Lock mean in regards to the transfer case that I have. I know my transfer case is not the same as all vehicles such as mine because some of them with different trim come with more options like 4WD HI, 4WD Lock, and 4WD Low.

What's the best time to use 4WD Lock? What actually happens in the transfer case when you do 4WD Lock, and how does that differ from the 4WD LO. If you know of any other post I can find this in let me know. There's just to much "jeep" crap out there and it's confusing the heck out of me.

When you engage 4 lock, the transfer case locks the front and rear drive shafts together. This is why you get a "crow hop" when turning on high traction surfaces in 4 lock. 4 low does he same thing and it reduces the gear ratio, as well. Example: Hi range will be 1:1 but low may be something like 2.75:1.

Yes, they lock together which means you don't really want to use 4wd unless you are on some kind of surface that is slippery, like snow, wet grass or gravel. It won't kill the truck if you are on a paved surface with it in 4wd but if you turn tight, that is when you will know it.
