I have a 2001 Dodge Ram ext cab 1500, bought it with a 5.2 motor and trans. They are both almost at 200,000 miles, and the transmission has been well taken care of so I decided to swap the motor to the 5.9. A mechanic friend's friend said he had a 5.9 with 150k miles that they took out of another 2nd gen that was also hooked up to a 5.2 transmission due to the rear end locking up, so the motor was already pulled and had been sitting for a few months.
When he swapped the motors, he first used the torque converter from the 5.9, and my truck wouldnt catch any gears. It would go in reverse fine, and drive fine but would not shift into second or above. He told me that he should have used the 5.2 torque converter instead of the 5.9 and that would fix the problem. After swapping those, when he turned my truck on there was a little clanky noise coming from the area of the torque converter, and it was blowing a crap ton of air. He drove it and I heard it from the road shift into second, so with this one it had reverse, first and second gear, but wouldnt catch anything after second, RPM's just kept going up. He then told me that I need to buy a 2500 stall torque converter and that would fix the issue, but other mechanics have told me the torque converter wouldnt make that issue. The transmission caught all gears perfect, never hesitated or slipped before, before I buy a new torque converter has anyone had this problem before?

Time for a new mechanic...

A stall converter (of any speed) is only needed when you put a performance cam in and it allows the engine to rev up in the RPM range before catching. It won't fix a trans that won't shift into gear, it just improves acceleration from a stop. What it sounds like is when he put the torque converter on from the 5.9, he didn't properly engage it, and damaged the pump.

The pump to the transmission, does that mean I should get a new transmission?
