My tran leaks from the front seal when it is running. If I fill to correct level the shifting is smooth and at the right rpms. But after running for a short time and the fluid is pumped out, the shifting gets worse sometimes slips and grabs. My mechanic tells me that in addition to the seal there is a bushing in the front that needs replacing as well. He has not seen the van, just heard my description. The problem for me, a 70 yr old with a willing mind but cranky old body, is cost (I am hearing in the $2K range). The van is clean, 135K miles, runs very good, and I like it alot but is probably not worth what a re-built tran would cost.

Any comments or suggestions appreciated.

If all you're talking about is an r & r to replace the seal, I have no clue what "bushing" he could be talking about (except maybe the pilot bearing/bushing) 2k seems over the top excessive for $25.00 worth of parts and two hours work.

I wish I could make $1000.00 an hour.
