i have a 94 dodge 1500 5.2L that will randomly shut off while I'm driving. It will start back up but only after like 5 minutes trying to start it. it will always crank, all of my electric is still on so i don't think ignition switch, i changed my oil and spark plugs and i put a new crank sensor in it a few months ago when i put a new tranny in. It will just completely shut off while driving and then start a few minutes later and drive fine. also another thing, i was driving it today and my rpms dropped to 0. my engine was still running and i could still rev my engine but it wasn't making me go faster, then the rpms shot back up and it drove normal. i am a mechanic and even this is stumping me, please help, i need this things running asap! thanks guys

I'd suspect crank or cam sensor.

I beg to differ Gen1. What you mentioned IS a possibility, however; the first thing I'd check is the ground strap from the engine block to the firewall.

My first thought would be the coil. But you said one time it was running but showing no RPM's and would rev but wouldn't accelerate. It could be a lose ground like Warlock said, but usually if something is jarred lose, it has to be jarred or bounced back. Like Gen1, I am thinking a sensor as well, but more like the throttle position sensor because of the reving without accelerating issue. It sounds like something is heating up and failing, then when it cools down, works again. I would try the tap test on the ECM. When it's running, tap on the ECM with a large screwdriver handle. If it dies, you know you have a bad ECM.

I had similar symptoms in a 86 dodge van. My problem ended up being the ignition wiring harness. It was a 12 inch pigtail located along the bottom side of the steering column. What happened was the connection had overheated and allowed the contacts to move around losing contact resulting in the engine dying and not restarting till the connection had cooled enough to make contact again. It cost approx. 35.00 to replace the pigtail.
