First, likely some of you will recognize me from the "other" Ram forum, specifically the EcoDiesel one...hi :Hey:

i had on order a '14 SLT ecodiesel with various options including 3.92 rear end.

i ended up, through someone i have family contacts with, a '14 Laramie with a lot more including air suspension, but no 3.92, for about the same price. in other words, too good of a deal to pass up.

so here comes the dumb question - i really really REALLY wanted 3.92 rear end and of course i have no real justification other than to say "its my money and i want it".

so - if i wanted to have 3.92 done and i realize how incredibly stupid and wasteful it would be - can it be done on my 3.55 truck? if i was willing to pay the $$$ (and i don't know i am, i just want to know if it can be done) - could this be done by a dealer service or is this something you need to find a specialist to do?

and yes, as i've admitted and posted - stupid dumb question and in no way is it something i need - it is just something i want. i'm sure many of you can understand that logice!

Yup.

Swapping the ring and pinion gears in a rear differential is a pretty straightforward, if very technical, bit of work, Jeff. You can get the dealer to do it, or any qualified shop, really. just need to make sure they know how to set everything up properly.

Another option would be to find a wrecked RAM and see if you could swap the entire rear axle. Should be easy if you can find a totaled ED with a 3.92 rear diff. (with or without anti-spin is your call - fwiw, anti-spin is the way to go, IMO).

don't you need to swap both front and rear?
Yes I believe you do. I've seen other threads on here discussing changing gears on these trucks and it is not a simple project. It is a very expensive thing to do. I am sure someone on here will give more details. I understand you really want the 3.92's and believe me I do understand what your saying when it comes to wanting not needing something, but I have a feeling you may want to just accept the 3.55's and be happy with it.

Assuming jeff has 4wd, yes...

On the point of cost - Jeff, think multiples of "thousands" for the parts and work here. I'd guess, at a dealership, $2500, maybe a bit more for the front and rear, if needed on both ends (assuming you do have 4wd in the truck). if not, knock off about half.

To cover an equally obvious point - you cannot run different ratios front and rear and hope to have the truck live when 4wd is engaged - something will break.

thanks all and yes it is 4wd. i'd say this something that i'd do down the line after some other changes. its not something i'm looking to do tomorrow. but in a few years if i still have the truck its something i'd consider. thanks everyone for the feedback.
