Good Morning All,

I purchased an 2500 4X4 ST about a year ago, and have been adding parts to it to get it the way I really want it....LOL. A big thanks go out to all of you who have posted your step by step mods (especially those with pics!) since I rely on those prior to any undertaking. Anyway, I need to add an overhead console and I am wanting to use the factory piece out of a wrecked truck. So I am wondering if anyone has done this, and if so the level of difficulty? I am also wanting to know if it is just a plug an play affair with the wiring harness? Thanks all for your help and have a great day!

Installed ovehead console on 2011 ST

Hello, I posted this information on another thread unrelated to this subject so I figured It would be better if I shared this info here so you may see it.

This is for a console that I installed on my truck as my first mod. I will be attaching pictures as soon as I can to better illustrate. I hope it helps.

The mod was fairly simple. I found the console on ebay. It came with the wiring harness and the mounting bracket .

The mounting bracket installs under the headliner and is supported by the sunvisor screws.

I cut the hole in the headliner by starting with a small hole and I worked in steps so it would not be too big when done. I took a bit longer but I did not want to go too far and have to buy a new headliner. Once the hole is cut the console simply snaps into the bracket.

The wiring was also simple. I followed the overhead light wire and found a plug in the dash under the left side cover on the end of the dash when the drivers door is open. The wires run down behind the pillar cover and into the dash. The overhead light was the only thing running off the original plug and had to be spliced to the new wiring harness.

Once wired up the lights worked as they should and can be turned on at any time by pushing on each light also both sides light up when the door is open or when the interior lights are turned on.

The console I bought does not have any modules on it but does have the power rear window switch on it.

I recently bought another console that does have the compass/homelink module on it but have not figured out how to get it to work yet.

Great info I will be looking forward to the pics and your write up.

I added Homelink to my 09 Challenger R/T that had a overhead console without Homelink. The Challenger had a connector under the passenger side A pillar cover that powered for the factory Homelink. You only need to connect 2 wires (Power and Ground) to make the Homelink work. The canbus is only used to communicate with the EVIC to display messages like 'Training'
and is not needed for it to function. I'm sure the connector are located elsewhere on the RAM.

Do you know what the pinouts are for the Homelink/Compass module?

The pin out is pretty much what you saw on the challenger 1) red fused B+ , 2)black Ground, 3)white with dark green for the llin bus.

The homelink should work with the ground and power but I an sure the compass will need the lin bus.

Since the wiring is all there already from the wiring harness I received with the overhead console. I believe all I need to do is have the sales code added that activates the module.

I need to do this mod as well. I added the EVIC cluster, but to get the compass to display correctly, I need to add the OH console with the compass module. Hopefully I will get the wiring figured out for the lin bus.

Since you are using the original harness you may need 2 sales codes.
These sales codes are from a 2010 Charger R/T but are still valid or have your parts guy run a build sheet for a loaded RAM.

I tapped into the Challenger's connector for the Homelink and bypassed the Lin bus. It worked you don't get feedback as to what the Homelink is doing but it will still could be paired to my garage door. Do the Homelink buttons light up when the headlights are on? They are very dim to see them in the daylight.

Thanks for the sales codes, I am going to have him add a bunch all at once when I get it done, so that hopefully everything will work that I have added or plan to add. I don't have the list here, but we found codes for the EVIC steering wheel controls, turn signal/puddle lamp mirrors (I will be adding tow mirrors), auto dimming mirrors, trailer brake control, and several others I can't remember off hand. I don't remember if the tech I spoke with had found the compass/door opener codes though.

You'll need sales code 'RDZ' this code for the for 'Steering Wheel Mounted Audio Controls' buttons on the back of the steering wheel.

Since the '12 Express already has the buttons to toggle through the odometer/trip odometer/temp on the front of the wheel. You may not need to add additional sales code to step through the EVIC other than have the proper EVIC type buttons.

I would like to add the EVIC buttons and the Uconnect buttons since my truck has the Uconnect option. I'm not sure if I'll need a different harness to or just the new buttons.

Did you have any luck adding the homelink and compass features? I purchased a console from eBay, but I still need to find the wiring harness for the lights, homelink, and compass.

I have not yet added the sales codes to activate the console. I am holding off until I add fog lights and brake controller so I can have all of the codes added at once.

If you are unable to find the complete wiring harness did they at least send the connector end for the lights and the module so you can run your own wires?

I have completed my installation. The homelink worked as expected just needed a fused b+ and ground. The wiring harness already had the lin bus wire connected to the cluster and the display worked without any programming needed.

The compass is a different story. Since it is not an available option on my truck the dealer could not add the code to my VIN.

Has the dealer added the EVIC cluster sales code to your truck?

I've heard that they cannot add all the sales code to a vehicles config, it has to be done at the factory.

The RDZ sales code added to the vehicle during the EVIC swap is actually for the steering wheel radio control buttons. That sales code is on the starscan list as available for my truck and was added without any problems.

The EVIC did work when it was swapped in but there was no way to contol it. The steering wheel EVIC controls worked after the wiring modifications to run B+ power, ground and the lin buss wires to them.

They added the RDZ to mine as well, it was available and added without issues. The steering wheel controls now work and I can control all functions of the EVIC. I have talked/emailed with someone who has added the EVIC and OH console both, and he said the compass worked once it was wired into the green wiring connector down by the door hinge. I am trying to figure out which wire so I can wire mine in once I find the OH console with the compass module.

The lin bus wire is white with dark green stripe. It is #3 pin out on the compass module. On the other end pop off the drivers side dash cover and right there you find a green plug that runs power to you overhead light. The lin bus white with dark green stripe wire is found in that plug.

Update. My compass has been activated by a local programmer who was able to hook up to my truck and turn on the options for the compass and the premium tire pressure monitoring system showing all four tire pressures instead of just a low tire message.

The only draw back is that if my truck ever needs to be flashed to update the system configuration at the dealer the changes made to activate these functions get erased.

It would be easy to have them activated again if that does happen.

On a side note, what year truck is your cluster out of, and does your ERS (manual gear selection) work? My cluster is out of an 09, and since I swapped clusters, I have lost ERS. I hoped it would activate once the RDZ sales code was added, but no such luck. Everything else works as it should, so I am a bit stumped.

No sales codes, those are used by the dealer to program available options specific to the VIN and those options were not available on my VIN.

The programming was done with a lap top through an OBDII plug.

The cluster I found was from a 2011. I wanted to make sure it was the same year as my truck just to make sure it would work.

The shifter display worked from the first time I plugged it in, even before I made the wiring change and added the RDZ sales code. Once the wiring was done I could control the EVIC and the only thing the RDZ sales code was for was to activate the radio control buttons.

Thanks, I guess I will have to swap my original cluster back in and see if the ERS works. If it does, I know it is an issue with the cluster. If it doesn't, I will try to track down where the problem is. I appreciate the input.
