Hey guys,

I need advice on whether to buy a diesel or gasser. They are both used and 2021 models. Same options aside from the infotainment system, the diesel has the base infortainment without android/apple car play. The gas has the 8.4

I tow regularly, not daily but probably 10 times a month.

The vehicle will be a work truck, I need a 2500 for payload mostly because my 1500 was over gvwr every day. To the point where I had uneven tire wear despite the tires were rotated at every oil change and in between each oil change.

I need to know if the increased maintenance cost will be worth it with the diesel or if I should stick with the gasser. (The gasser does have more payload, obviously)

I will also use it to tow our camper as well. It is under 6k and I can also tow it with my gladiator which is diesel and gets 14mpg towing it..

The gas truck will get low-teens fuel mileage. You did not say if it will be 2wd or 4x4 but that makes a bit of difference for mileage. You also did not say how many miles you drive, just that it is frequent.

If you frequently tow and drive a lot of miles then the extra expense (both now and later) with the diesel will make a bit more sense. If you do not drive very far then the gas truck will make more sense economically speaking. Resale wise the diesel will command a little more money but that is only paying you back some on the extra you had to spend to buy and keep it.

I am a strong proponent of buying a gas truck unless you are going to work it every day, then a diesel makes more sense. Between the higher fuel price, higher maintenance costs, and the DEF required to operate it there are some very valid points against the diesel powertrain.

Before DPF and DEF I would recommend a diesel hands down. Better pulling and better mileage. Now that they all have this emission BS the only way I'd own a diesel is if I drove 60 miles or more per day hauling a heavy load. Your on the cusp of that range, but that's my personal preference. The Gas engine (especially that 6.4 hemi) put down more then enough power and torque for light/mild loads and if you do a lot of in town driving its what I would use.

I will never go back to a gas vehicle again and love my 2013 Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel Cummins truck! My husband and I have the same year but he has the 8ft bed and mine is 6ft. I hunt and pull my 7x12 cargo trailer without any issues. Hubby says I can haul anything!! Lol.
