Airbag Light Question

2237 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Toms Blue Ram 1500
Hello, I just bought a 1998 Ram 1500 and the previous owner just replaced the steering colum because he said that he was having issues with the gear selector putting the truck in gear. After installing the new colum the airbag light is on. I havent a clue where to begin to look and am hoping someone may be able to give me some ideas or a place to start looking!! This is obivously this a bad problem but to make it even worse, in order to pass safety inspection i need to get this light off so that i can register the truck. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

did you check the fuses?
first thing I checked was fuses. Its at a shop now and apparantly the clock spring is missing from the column, and its a column out of a Durango not a ram, which would explain all the additional controls on the steering wheel. We shall see what happens. There are some repairs people just should not diy.
Most air bag problem's are usually clock spring related. They where recalled at one time. But missing is a bigger problem then a recall!
Be careful if your attempting to diagnose the problem yourself . Some test equipment have self powered test leads that can trigger the airbags . Be careful . It could be a defective airbag or even clockspring if the problem just started since the column was replaced .
