Howdy,
I sadly realized that it makes more sense to buy her a minivan than me a new truck. In keeping my truck, I want to be happier with it and was debating on swapping out my gears to 3.9something's or 4.10's.
I have stock gears and 33" tires. I drive 90+% around town with a 4 mile commute to work and too many traffic lights and pull a trailer here and there. Bunch of trips to Home Depot and what not.
I'm unhappy with the driving characteristics (power) when I'm at 45-55, which is my most common speed minus the stop and go. I regularly turn the OD off in town to cure this, but at and over 50mph the rpm's climb higher than I like and I feel like I am racing the engine.
Even though many people claim that they have plenty of power with the 3.55's and 33's, I think that makes me a prime candidate for swapping the gears.
I don't mind spending the money on the gears, just want to make sure it is a sound decision. Figuring going to 3.9something's is only a 10% change in RPM, right? I'd drop a couple miles off of my sweet spot while cruising the highway, but nothing big? 4.10's would be about 15% change in RPM at any given speed?
4.10's and 33's are probably the equivalent of a truck coming with 3.73's and stock tires?
If my logic is correct, I'm going to start staring at the tach and speedo while I'm driving and try to avoid the people on there cell phones. Do some mental math and figure out where I'd be with any given RPM. I know where the engine is happy and I'll just choose the gears that are the best compromise.
I am capable, but have never swapped gears, so I don't know how good/bad the improvement feels. Got a vote or have you made a similar swap?
I guess I can do something silly like a 2500 axle swap for not a ton more money and even get manual hubs, but have never tried to hunt down a part that big.
