Blank Radio Screen

Radio was working fine this morning. Put the truck in reverse and back up screen came on as normal. Sat there for a minute waiting on traffic and attempted to change radio stations via steering wheel control while the back up screen was on. Station changed as usual while the back up screen was on. Drove away and the radio screen went blank. Radio played fine through steering wheel controls. Shut system down and restarted. Still a blank screen. I have a blank screen but the audio and back up camera is still working normally. Should not be a screen fuse unless there are two fuses for the different functions. Any ideas?
2013 ram, 8.4 radio.

Hi Hydrasport,

Sorry to hear about this! You can try performing a soft reset of you Uconnect system:

1) Put your vehicle into the accessories mode (ACC or RUN) **For keyless start (push-button) vehicles: push the start button twice without having your foot on the gas or brake pedal**
2) Hold down the Phone and voice recognition buttons (or tuner and volume knob), at the same time, for thirty seconds.
3) Let go of the buttons
4) Turn vehicle off
5) Open driver’s side door for thirty seconds (or until dash illumination goes black)
6) Close door
7) Restart vehicle
8) Let the media center load up and see if concern is still present

If you end up deciding to visit your local dealership for further diagnosis I'd be happy to offer assistance if needed. Just send us a PM with your VIN and let me know.

I did the same thing on my uconnect and nothing happened on my 2013, one minute the screen was good and then when I remote started later that day and went to the cab of the truck and the whole thing is dead, i mean nothing works at all anywhere, the only sign of life is the clock on my dash cluster which I assume is somehow related with the touch screen. Any help anyone?

My 2015 has a similar problem off and on. Every once in a while I'll start up the truck and the screen is black. Music doesn't play which sucks cuz driving to work listening only the my flowmaster makes it hard to get in the groove. I try turning it off and on and still the same result. Then when I get off work 12 hours later and fire it up everything is working fine. Hasn't been enough of an issue to drag it into the shop and pay for yet. Any fixes for this?

Hi LuauPig,

Are you still within the mileage of your basic 3/36 warranty? The radio is covered under that, so the dealership should be checking it out at no cost to you, if so.

Have you tried a hard reset when it does this? Hold the buttons in the middle of the volume and tune knobs down simultaneously to do it

Mine did this randomly twice last winter while driving but it has been good since then. Hopefully it won't return.

Hey Guys,
Anyone come up with a solution for this one? I'm having the same problem with my 2014 Laramie. Black screen on startup happens at least once a week. I lose backup camera and radio for a good minute or two. This only started happening after I did the latest update a while back.

Currently having the same exact issue as the original post with a 2013 Laramie. Also, my display has an occasional glitch, while driving, that causes what appears to be a complete reset of the electronics of the truck (radio, dash, gauges, etc.).

Has anyone found a reliable solution?

Thanks in advance!

8.4 radio screen locking up at startup is a thread on the LD RAM forum that is about 6 months old. No new information from RAMCARES.

Tried hard reset but should not have to do that every week. Several forum members have reported the same issue and we are looking for a solution to the problem. The radio has been updated via internet and USB drive.

Hi Hydrasport,

We're sorry to hear that you're experiencing this. I do not see any current software updates that directly addresses this concern. With that said, I would like to help you get this inspected by your dealer. If you would like additional assistance with this, please send us a private message.

2013 Ram 2500 with same issue as all the others above. Have tried several hard resets with every combination of dash/steering wheel buttons, battery cables disconnected and zip tied together for 12 hrs. No luck, screen remains blank. Occasionally get the ram logo and sirius radio emblem...no sound, black screen, Found the radio fuse (in the harness just under the fuse panel...still has continuity). Am I off to the stealership?

2014 Ram 1500 Laramie, same issue. I turn my truck on and every now and then the radio radio, phone, climate control or back up screen all fail to turn on. occurs randomly since the last up system update about a month ago. Took it to the dealer for separate recall and all they did was charge me for looking at it. they couldn't back out the last update and said I was up to date. since taking it to the dealer a week ago it has happened 3 times. Sporadically I get warning screen that my uconnect phone needs updating, please contact your dealer. (...the dealer could not recreate this error or see anything wrong.) . please help :)

I’m having same issue on my 2014. Took it to the dealer and they charged me to look at it. Seen the codes saying lost connection with radio. Said I had to get a new radio. Didn’t get new radio yet. Has worked for the most part , seems like when I hit bumps it goes off or comes back on?????

Sorry... I had dealer verify my issue ( dead radio) bur shopped around the province for the radio... definitely different prices per dealer... had to drive south anyway, radio dealer installed with 2 year warranty $1150. There are after market options with 10.5" screen, but I do like the Ram options on mine. And I believe a dealer code is required, say if you purchased radio from auto wrecker... code may be tough to get, but I could be wrong. Good luck!

I have a 2017 ram 1500 4 days ago my screen went black and freezes on the ram sirius xm screen. Went to the dealership paid $121 for them to tell me I need a new radio. Uconnect said my truck was up to date. Nothing works no music at all, bluetooth doesn't work either. I was told there was a recent update. Any idea how to fix or what is happening?

Hi,

I would recommend trying a soft reset of you Uconnect system:

1) Put your vehicle into the accessories mode (ACC or RUN) For keyless start (push-button) vehicles: push the start button twice without having your foot on the gas or brake pedal

Please let me know if this works. If not, I would be happy to get a case open for you.

Same issue as Tmaly

I have a 2017 ram 1500 Laramie longhorn. This morning the screen got stuck on the Ram/SiriusXM screen while I drove to work. When I got to work I restarted the vehicle and that same screen came on for about 5 seconds and then went black. Music won’t play, radio won’t connect Bluetooth to my phone. But the backup camera works when I go in to reverse.

I have tried the soft resets suggested in the thread. I downloaded the update on a flash drive but it won’t show on the screen so I am unable to update it.

What can I do next besides spending a ton of additional money on this truck?

thanks.

I got mine fixed and didn’t pay anything. Here is what you need to do:

1. Call Uconnect while you are in your truck. Have your Vin number ready. Explain your issue and they will guide you through some troubleshooting that won’t do anything except waste your time. The goal is to get them to open a claim in their system and get a claim number! You might have to hang up and call back to get someone competent. The call center in India was no help at all! You have to get to the center in the US.

2. Make an appointment at your local dealership. Tell them your issue and make sure that they complete a full diagnosis. Get the results of that diagnosis. It should say that the issue is due to a failed over the air update.

3. Call Uconnect back.Tell them the results of the diagnosis (failed software update) They will upgrade your case and will assign it to a case manager.

4. The case manager will eventually look at the case and call you and talk over some details. They will then call the dealership to verify the results of the diagnosis.

5. Uconnect case manager will approve the replacement radio.

6. Schedule another appointment at your local dealership for radio replacement

7.Radio gets replaced! Yay!

This process took me about 2 weeks and I brought my truck to the dealership 5 times! You will have to constantly call and harass Uconnect because they will not call you back. It was a painful process but totally worth it for a free radio replacement! Hope this helps.

Was your truck still under warranty? How did you get the dealership to do the diagnosis for free or did you pay them to do that? I’m sorry for the questions my truck is a 2015 and I bought it used just trying to figure out what is going wrong with it. Also did you have the GPS problem?
