HI!

I figured I would post here as everyone is probably worn out by the 71 pages of the sticky thread on this topic.

I've started a class action suit for this issue. I need 5 individuals with this problem to be initially named to file the suit.

From attorney " I need any pamphlets, user manuals or other paperwork from when the car was purchased. Ideally there be a separate document spelling out the warranty terms. Also a repair bill or something stating the exact issue."

Bonus is you are from South Carolina ! would make the suit much easier to file. Feel free to DM me if interested.

How did your lawsuit go?
I am having the same issues 2012 RAM 1500 Hemi 5.7 L.
A bunch of YouTube links are popping out showing the same issue.

It's outrageous.

Yes, if it is a certified pre-owned vehicle, ALL warranties start from the original inservice date and mileage - ie. the day and miles of the original sale when new.

IF it would have been just a "used" truck but not a certified pre-owned truck, the extended warranty would have started at the mileage that was on the truck when you bought it. - The extended warranty is also 2 or more times expensive than the extended warranty on a certified pre-owned vehicle.

This happened in my 2016 Ram 5.7 a less expensive fix is to find a low milage 5.7 motor. I found a 2018 with 22,000 miles for $1,800 delivered. $1,200 to put it in. So now at least I have a better engine for another 100,000 miles before it happens again. I am in on the class action if that is moving ahead, I know others with the same problem here in NY

I am in on the law suit if it ever happens.

I just bought a 2011 Durango Citadel with 5.7 Hemi, 85k miles.

Got this famous engine light after a month or so. Shop said it was a #3 cylinder stalled. Cleared the light and hasn't came back on yet. I see that this is a frequent issue.

I found this issue online while shopping for a new water pump that just failed today. The water pump shaft bearing is wasted and water is pouring out. I'll fix that tomorrow.

Please contact me to join any law suit on the cam/lifter issue. Thanks. eyearicks@aol.com

2014 Ram 1500 with 109K miles - lifters, cam, and a bad transmission!!!
After months of dealing with a torque converter shutter and the dealer unwilling to acknowledge the issue, I took to a transmission shop that quickly identified the issue and rebuilt my torque converter. Vehicle performed great again....for two weeks. Engine light with misfire code in #3 cylinder......yep, you guessed it - bad lifter and damaged cam.

Anybody have suggestions for good aftermarket lifters?

Never buying another Dodge, Ram, or Chrysler vehicle. Going back to GMC!

Happy to join class action effort.

I just emailed Dodge. They replied within a few days. Long email, but here's the meat in it.....

In regards to your Dodge Durango, we fully appreciate your concern, particularly in view of the expense and inconvenience involved, however, after the warranty terms have expired, we do rely on our customers to accept the repair costs for the vehicle.

Hello All,
I have a 2011 Chrysler 300c with a 5.7L Hemi, my mom bought in new, and gave it to my son when she stopped driving. She religiously took it to the dealer have all service. I am pretty anal with maintenance of my vehicles. Oil changes every 3000-4000 miles. Usually closer to 3000, my son has the car in Myrtle Beach, SC at school, I'm on top of him getting oil changes, I send him to the dealership. He goes in today 10-22-20 and they tell him he has a ticking noise coming from the engine, and low and behold it needs a cam ,lifters and rollers, $4500 to repair. After he told me I started to investigate and see a lot of posts with the same issue with this motor. I see that there is a lawsuit being filed, any updates or how to get involved. I joined one against Ford, had a 2005 Lincoln Navigator with 5.4L, and the OE spark plugs would break in the head. Ford had to pony up for up to 75% of the repair, so hopefully this comers out the same. Please message me either to this post or my email, fjbarone@frontiernet.net. I do have alot of the paperwork from the original purchase I can go through and I will be calling the dealership doing the repair and advising them that I want all the related parts from this job.

Good Evening,
I just saw this post on the Hemi issues. I was wondering how the class action suit was going. I just ran into the same problem with my sons car. It is being repaired in South Carolina, but not registered there. Please let me know how it is going and if I can help in anyway. I 'am calling the dealership tomorrow and requesting all the parts be saved that are being replaced and also a detailed quote on what the issue is and the cause.

Thanks, Fred

did the dealer say what was the reason for the failure?

Eh the mileage is a little lower, but the car is over a decade old... it sucks for sure and i would bet the car is near perfect otherwise. I bought an extended warranty on my chevy truck last time and it paid for itself over twice the cost. I know that once your out of warranty anything can happen. More modern engines have more sensors/valves etc that can fail. Your engine has multiple displacement systems and variable valve timing system along with sensors that can cause issues in what is a performance engine (363 horsepower is a fair amount).

A radiator from the dealer would run probably 1000$ so they did the job for 3500$
So you saying you son never got on it? :) Not that you shouldn't be able to use the car a bit spirited :) But yes it should not have failed that early.
People say its from idling long periods of time, but I doubt you did that.

There is no class action as most of these cars are 6-7-8-9-10 years old is there? Your car was built in 2010 so its a decade old.

The Hemi i had the little plastic retainer cracked holding the lifters in, it was a southern vehicle so it saw extreme heat but it lasted to 198k.

What kind of warranty did they give on on the repair?

Mike,
The radiator was about $600 in parts, should not have been much on the labor since they did the camshaft. The dealer put on the estimate "Internal Engine Failure", They gave me 90 days, 3,000 miles on workmanship and 24 moths unlimited mileage on parts. I made a case with Chrysler, and as i thought they denied it do to being out of warranty. I will be appealing but don't have much faith in that either. Then I will see which way it goes.

My 2015 Ram is in the shop now. 127,000 highway miles. Quote is around $5K to replace camshaft and lifter (cylinder 6). Had already thrown $1200 at it to replace valve cover gasket, #6 injector, and 16 new plugs. This is my third dodge pickup and the previous one went to 300,000 miles with zero issues. I called Dodge but they said to go pound sand. I will join any class action suit that materializes.

Fixing mine as we speak. I was a Chrysler technician and have seen to many fail. Its been a tsb since about 2012 or 2011 I tuhh

I worked for chrysler as an engine tech. I have one apart in my garage right now where the roller pin started to slide out and was beating on the bore. No damage to the cam surprisingly. I had to pull the cam and slide the lifter into the cam bore to remove it. To my knowledge this has been an active tsb from at least 2012 (which is the year mine is) up to the last year I looked up which was 2020 I believe. It was a flawed design that was never corrected. The issue with some of these engines is after the repair they may still run like sh*t. This usually only happens with a severely worn cam lobe. The problem is oil contamination. As per FCA you should pull the oil control valve located under the intake manifold. If the screen has severe metal build up on it then the engine is toast and they call for automatic replacement of the engine. If the valve is clean and you replace the cam and lifters FCA also sent a notice to dealers saying THE OIL PAN MUST BE REMOVED DURING CAM REPLACEMENT AND THE PAN AND ENGINE MUST BE CLEANED. If you have a 4x4 truck most guys dont like pulling them oil pans. They are time consuming and a pain in the a**. But what happens is the oil pump sucks up the debris after the repair the oil gets containminated and the metal particles tear up bearings, cylinder walls and the lifter bores. Oil pressure is lost and the lifters no longer work again. I've seen that happen after repairs driving them not even 10 miles. Somebody needs to sue them. If antibodies really interested in it i live in arizona. I'm pissed. Fca bought them and turned the brand to dokie. I love the hemi and its a shame. Word of advice. Grab yourself a step up comp cam and a mds delete kit and program that crap out.

My cam lone was wiped out my lifter was seized could have caused more engine damage I did the work myself i saved my receipts and documented my work so far I'm $1500+ in decided to do the mds delete on mine hellcat lifters and diablo tune such a joke to have a cam and lifter failure like that and the higher ups dont want nothing to do with it there really is enough people out there to to get this ball rolling i might post a you tube video I might find a pro bono lawyer willing to take the case this has caused me so much stress time and money im broke .. If your trucks ticking get it fixed asap oh yeah i had 3 broken exhaust bolts too that should be an EPA DEAL RITE THERE. Just another mopar failure. Smh.. Ill never buy another dodge or ram again..

Mine only had 100000km on the engine. New crate engine would have been 6-8k.
To fix 3-4k but could have been more. I didn’t even get them to start tearing it apart.

Dodge had me by the kahunas, I unloaded it on a trade to cut my losses. Still a 8 year old truck which I’m sure more things would need replacing in the near future. Funny how all the dealers play dumb on the problem.

Went with a short term lease on a truck.

Good thing you have the know how to fix it yourself. How long has it been out of commission?

I had taken my 2012 Durango into the dealer Scarborough Town Chrysler about 4 years ago with among other things a distinct ticking sound coming from the engine. The service guy gave us the explanation that it was the "hemi tick" and it was normal and not to be worried. I asked to speak to the service manager and he reiterated the same story and said it was quite normal and that all hemis make that noise. I didnt like it but like and idiot I trusted them. Last year we got caught by surprise when it turned out to be the cam shaft. We had no choice but to repair due to the need for a vehicle. It cost us 6400 plus tax to get it replaced. We went to Menzie's in Whitby for the replacment and when I asked for the old parts they didnt want to give them to me and told me I had to pay a core charge and told me that I probably wouldnt want the parts if I had to pay. I told him no I want the parts and I want a bill stating that they charged me for the parts. He went away and 15 minutes later he came back and said that he was mistaken and gave me all the parts. I am all for a class action, they are fully aware of the problem and did nothing to mitigate the extent of the problem.

I would definitely sign on as I am now going on my second cam and lifter failure . Thank goodness I'm a mechanic and can do it for just part costs but still gets expensive ! 2010 Ram 1500. There has been wide speculation as to the cause of these failures and the cause is not a single item issue. Splash oiling the cam and lifter rollers is not sufficient, cams are not billet (so not hardened enough to withstand a failed roller) and what I believe is the main problem is that the lifters are fed oil through the pushrods via port in the rocker arm along with a near microscopic oil port to lube valve tip. Once any dirt or foreign object blocks either port you get oil starvation leading to wear leading to excessive valve lash and eventual hammering of parts until failure. Chrysler Dodge Jeep knows there is a problem and has issued TSB's on car lines but has not done so on trucks, suv, or van. "SAME" engine ! I can be contacted at davecm66@gmail.com
