catalytic converter problem

Hey guys... the Converter on my 98 Ram 2500 4x4 (360), is rattling and leaking , the shop quoted me over $500 for a pipe assembly with converter attached.. oof...
Does anyone have any ideas on something thats a little more "cost effective".... besides hacking it off.. heh.
Also, what ill effects can this have on my motor over time... will it compromise mileage etc..

P.S. I've been thinking of doing something like duels or maybe even headers... would this be a good time to tackle something like this? I'd love to hear lots of comments and suggestions...

Depending on what state you live in, it will fail emissions test with out a cat. If your cat is clogged you could take it off and take all of the honeycomb out and weld it back on the truck.
