Check engine light due to new intake?

1835 Views 9 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  GTyankee
I recently installed a k&n CAI (K&N 57-1533) for my 03 hemi. first time around was pretty rough as my dad and I had trouble shoving the air temp sensor into the new tube. In other words we both broke it, haha, so I put what was let in assuming the engine light would come on and it did. Went out to autozone to got a replacement and re installed the intake and unplugged/reset the battery.. yet the light remains on. On the k&n website it says to contact them and that the light may be nothing. Has anyone had this problem? I don't hear or see any leaks I just thought it might be the new amount of air messing with the engine? Thanks in advance

whats the code? if you dont have a code reader, cycle the key on and off really fast about 3 or 4 times and then wait. you'll see your odometer flash a P code. if you get it i can tell you probably what it is
ok I did that and I got p 0113
I just googled it and it says its something to do with the IAT which I had trouble getting in..
A code P0113 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:

  • Internally failed IAT sensor
  • Faulty connection at IAT sensor
  • Open in IAT ground circuit or signal circuit
  • Short to voltage in IAT signal circuit or reference circuit
  • IAT harness and/or wiring routed too close to high-voltage wiring (e.g. alternator, spark plug cables, etc.)
  • Faulty PCM (less likely but not impossible)
Possible Solutions
First, if you have access to a scan tool, is there an IAT reading? If the IAT reading is logical then the problem is likely intermittent. If the reading is less than -30 degrees, unplug the connector. Install a jumper wire between the harness connector signal and ground circuits. The IAT temperature reading on the scan tool should be maxed out at the high end. For example it should be 280 degrees Farenheit or higher. If it is, the wiring is okay, and it may have been the connection. If it isn't install the jumper wire between the IAT signal circuit and the chassis ground.
If now the IAT reading on the scan tool is maxed out then check for an open in the IAT ground circuit. If you get no reading at all on the scan tool, it's likely that the sensor signal is open or the 5 volt reference is missing. Check using a DVOM (digital volt ohm meter) for a 5 volt reference. If it's there, then unplug the connector at the PCM and check for continuity on the IAT signal circuit between the PCM connector and the IAT connector.

make sure you didnt damage the pins the in the connector and if you got a replacement one make sure you get a good one from napa or carquest. autozone and advance auto parts or any chain store like that usually you'll end up with a bad sensor right out of the gate. if you got a volt meter make sure you got ground on one side of the connector i believe it might be a blue/green wire dont hold me to it. and its going to be a 5volt on the other side since its a share reference voltage with the map and a few other sensors. i know these wire can break right below the wire covering at the connector and you'll never see it. i usually a little carb cleaner on the rubber grouments right before i stick the air temp sensor in and then plug it in. depends on the intake set up it might make the wire stretch to far and cause it to break. so check everything and the power and ground. i find using a paper clip straighten out you can probe the connector with out damaging it on the plug side. need any other assitance send me a private message

Make sure it's turned the right way to accept airflow and not block it!
just put my k&n cai in two weeks ago and i broke the tip off my sensor so i glued it back on but the engine light still came on so i took both + & - off the battery for 20 minutes and then connected them and all was good i have a 2012 laramie 5.7 hemi...

yea thanks man. i took the tube off and shoved it a little farther in and unplugged the battery for about 20 minutes and boom, light off.
