Hey guys, my 18 year old saved up his money from working the last few years and bought himself a 2015 1500 Outdoorsman 5.7 with the 8 speed transmission and 4x4. He's had it about 3 weeks and it's got about 122k miles on it.
A couple of days ago it started making an intermittent chirping noise that sounds like it's coming from right behind the engine. I took it to an older mechanics shop that I've used to fix smaller stuff. He crawled around and listened to it and thinks the sound is coming from the torque converter possibly.
So I take it to a transmission shop and the guy said he thinks it's the TC as well, but can't say for sure. It's somewhat intermittent, it increases in frequency as you increase rpm. He told us to keep driving it till the sound gets worse and he should be able to diagnose it then.
It almost sounds like a pulley going bad or a bad bearing to me, but I'm not an expert. It's like a chirping or slipping sound. Both guys thought it sounded like it was coming from behind the engine. I can try and get a video of the sound of that could help diagnose it.

First thing I would try is taking the serpentine belt off the front of the engine and start it to make sure a pulley or idler isn't making a noise and sound traveling.

I've never heard a torque converter chirp. You sure there isn't a bird nest in the bell housing?

Most likely its a seal, bushing or bearing going out but like the tech said until it gets worse you might not be able to pinpoint it.
2012RAM1500RT here has an easy place to start though and might be right, I've seen sounds carry to strange places before.

My son took a video from underneath the truck. It sounds a lot different from outside, but here's what he got.
2015 Ram 1500 making weird noise
That sounds like the exhaust leaking through the manifold gasket like a reed. Its like putting a piece of grass between your hands and blowing to make noise.
Start with that exhaust leak and see if fixes it.

One test you can is use a towel and plug the exhaust pipe with and listen to see if the noise increases, if so, it's definetely leaking manifold gasket and probably broken bolts on manifold. Like Zaan says, it sounds like a exhaust leak

indeed. If you have a welder its easy to get the broken bolts out just weld a nut onto the broken bolt. I don't attempt to drill out anything anymore. last place I was a mechanic at the owner straight up told me if I tried to drill out a broken bolt he'd fire me on the spot.

I drill if I can, but EZ Out is asking to make a doorstop out of cylinder head, esp when you got metal stud and aluminum head.

Make sure you take both manifolds off and get them planed, and replace any bolts that look iffy (the AR side of me would replace them all).
I think my son is actually thinking about going to long tube headers. He's doing a bunch of research on it. He might have to wait a month. Is he going to do any more damage driving it for a bit till he fixes it?

Has anyone used CorrisionX on rusted/stuck nuts/bolts/studs? It was developed for the aviation industry to work on old planes plus marine use. One of my MG buddies recommended I use it to get my 1960 MGA apart. It worked great on rusted/stuck nuts and bolts. Last weekend, my son was having difficulty getting the front end apart on his 2015 Forester after 4 winters in Germany so I sent him a can. He said it saved him big-time. It has been worth every penny.

Problem with manifold bolts is you have 2 dissimilar metals, and over time they actually weld themselves together. Usually the bolt breaks or pulls the threads out if they are in their awhile. That's why you're supposed to put anti-seize on any steel bolts/plugs going into a aluminum piece.

For rusty bolts/nuts, best thing I've found short of a torch is PB Blaster. Stinks to high heaven, but works most of the time.

I had that same sound in my 2013...turned out to be inside the motor. I didn't hear the same noise in your videos, but it sounds like a chirp and is intermittent. Loud enough to be heard with the windows down at idle. I took the truck back on the 7th day and they said it was an idler pulley, but my mechanic told me it was not that after we pulled the serp belt. Pull the belt and if it still makes the noise you will know it's inside the motor.

The dealership switched me to another truck because they said the fix was $8k!

Is it an intermittent chirp?

My mechanic told me it sounded like it was coming from the timing chain area when he isolated the noise. The manifold bolts are not too hard a fix, but the chirp was enough to have the dealer shy away from their idea of fixing it. It was a used truck dealer at a Kia dealership in Mesquite, Texas. From the cost estimate I was assuming either a complete disassemble to fix or a new engine. Hope that's not the case with yours but it sounds like it.
