Coolant smell from vents in cab.

I've had the same problem of no heat to the drivers side, that is the heater core being plugged, ive never had the smell inside the cab, so yours may be heater core leak. I flushed my heater core out the first time and it was kind of a fast job, it worked but clogged again, this time I left it because of warmer weather, a couple weeks ago we got a cold wave, i turned the heater on and same thing, no heat. As I prepared it to flush again I noticed there was leaking in the water pump area, around the temp sensor. I proceeded to flush the heater core thoroughly this time and now my heat is great and the leak up front went away... so i guess if I were you I'd try a thorough flush first, if you still smell coolant then you may have to change the heater core. But see if unplugging it will halt the leak up front.

From the fire wall there are two hoses that go into the water pump, its easier to disconnect it there, and plug the water pump inlet/outlet so you don't lose too much antifreeze, then I just ran a water hose to one end and put the other end in a clear bottle, flush water through it then switch hoses, back flush it, and repeat that a few times, I then added some radiator flush and cleaner and let that sit for a while, then flushed and back flushed again, then I blew out all the water if you have an air hose its better but i just blew through my hand squeezed tightly around the hose, I blew both ways and then with one end filled with fluid and the other end up filled it til it ran out the opposite end and reconnected hoses, if you have the stock antifreeze in it still its best to add the same stuff back in, as I've heard mixing can coagulate antifreeze causing more plugging. I ran mine through so the thermostat cycled the fluid and checked my level to see if I had to add fluid but I didn't it was still good

Oh yeah the clear bottle is to see what was all in it.. a lot of stuff came out of mine, be careful with a air hose too, if the inside corroded itll probably be pretty easy to blow a hole through the core
