Question,
I have read a couple forums about " knocking" or Piston noise. I have a 2013 Dodge Ram 1500, 4x4 4.7L with 5k on it.
I have been having the same noise on my truck and no sure what to do about it.
I have taken it to the dealer and they inspected it for engine noise when cold, Noise does go away once warm ( this is not 100 % true) it gets less tho.
They say on there report " Inspect Y Pipe found pass side collector has a leak, removed collectors and inspect, found metal torn on pass side collector, ordered new y pipe to correct customers complaint" and they did that repair last week.
as soon as I picked the truck up and started it I knew the repair had not corrected it.
I have taken a video and uploaded it to Youtube so that you can hear what I am talking about.
You can hear it from both sides of the truck but you will see that if I am on the passengers side of the truck it is louder then if I am on the drivers side.
I also opened the hood on my start today and it does not sound like it is coming from the top at all .

Wondering if Anyone has ANY ideas what I should do about it or what it sounds like to them. I am taking it back to the dealer on Tuesday, but I have no clue what they are going to say I figure they are going to now tell me it is NORMAL, and I know it is not, and they have basically said that they know what I am talking about as they tried to fix it once so I dont think they can say it is not an issue.

My dad's 2010 Ram hemi had a loud knocking when he started his. It turn out to be bad lifters. That could be your problem but idk if the valve train is the same with the 4.7. I hope this gives you something else to help with your problem.

LOL,yours is quiet compared to my 4.7.
Mine rattles to beat hell on start-up,but goes away pretty quickly.
The 4.7's seem to be noisy motors.
I dont worry to much about mine, still lots of warrenty left, but if the dealer does find something wrong with yours, please pass the info on.
What oil filter are you using

The Hemi is a pushrod while the 4.7 is an OHC valve train FWIW.

Just an update on this, As of TODAY I had it back into the Dealer for Some other issues, Which I am going to post in one forum line in a list, But they have said today that they were not able to Duplicate the noise issue at cold start or any start today. AS soon as I got int he vehicle and started it, The noise was and is there.
They said that they will re look at it when I bring it back in next week so they can replace both shocks in the back for the squeek or noise from the rear end of the truck.
I am thinking on having an independent shop look at the engine noise issue? Has anyone even had that done and went back to the dealer with it?

cold idle engine noise

My 4.7 has this cold idle noise that goes away after a couple minutes as well. Took it to dealer where they kept it all week State they can hear it but are unable to locate what it is.I have reported this to Chrysler headquarters in Detroit x two. They will take your vin and create ticket for vehicle. Was told that if enough complaints come if concerning this issue they will check further into it.Was told they are receiving the same complaint with the 5.7.
