Exhaust brake to warm things up? If yes, any way to auto on?

Was reading thru the Diesel Supplement (finally) and I noticed is says this:

"Operating the exhaust brake at idle will greatly improve warm up rate and will help keep the engine close to operating temperature during extended idle."

then later...

"The exhaust brake feature can also be used to reduce the engine warm up time. To use the exhaust brake as a warm-up device, the vehicle must be stopped or moving less than 5 mph (8 km/h), the Exhaust Brake Indicator must be on, and the coolant temperature must be below 180°F (82°C) and ambient temperature below 60°F (16°C)."

Anyone tried this? Comparisons between with it on and not? If it does help, any way to have it turn on automatically without a trailer attached, say during remote start?

I can't easily try this as I live in a town home community, and having that diesel fire up and run for a while at 5am is just rude. But curious to know anyway.

Thanks in advance.

Never knew. Maybe my '14 doesn't. I plug mine in when the overnight temp is supposed to get in the 20's or so. At startup the water temp is 60+. After a couple of minutes the engine goes into a high idle. When I go out, 5 minutes after startup, the temp is around 100 and starting to blow warm air.

Be interesting to know if others have done it the way you described.
Yeah I was surprised to read that too.

This weekend I had to stay the night out of town and took the opportunity to try it this morning. Temps outside were about 30deg, I remote started walked outside and engaged the exhaust brake. Within a few seconds, I could hear it start to work (hissing sound) and within about 30 seconds the idle auto kicked up to about 1100rpm. Within a couple mins the windows were defrosted and the interior was pipping hot. I can't say for sure, but I think it would take 5 or more minutes to do the same without the brake on.

So it seems to work as advertised. Would love to find a way to have it turn on automatically...
Yes it definitely works. Search "Cummins Cold Start" on youtube and you'll find hundreds of videos.

From the factory, no there's no way to have it turn on automatically with remote start that I'm aware of. It will only bump up into high idle by itself. With custom tuning I believe you can have it set to come on but that obviously requires the tuning.
Sure enough.

When you say tuning, do you mean aftermarket or is this something I can ask the dealer to turn on for me?

Thanks!

Aftermarket. I know EFI Live can do it. Not sure about a RaceME Ultra. You could talk to Ray Rich at Double R Diesel as he'll have some more information on the subject.
Understood, thanks again.

If anyone has a source for a trailer simulator that would do the same, please post up.

You can also tap the cruise on button then the set button on your steering wheel and the engine will run up to 1000 rpms. Do this upon start up will also help to raise engine temp.
