Thanks guys for the help I've decided to go with the Flowmaster 40 Series. Next thing, I want to keep my resonators on in fear of being too loud/drone. (I have a newborn 3 week old co-captain now) Correct me if Im wrong but by keeping my resonators and only replacing the factory muffler with a FM 40 that will keep it from being too loud and minimizing the drone at the same time giving me the deep throaty sound of the Flowmaster?

If you're just looking for a mild add on for a bit nicer sound...then yup. Those 40's are cheap enough anyway so its not like you'll be out a whole pile of cash if it ends up being not quite what you'd hoped.

Just a heads up:

I love my fm 40 on my truck but will be replacing it for a magnaflow 18 tomorrow for the exact reasons you are trying to avoid (2 babies in backseat). My resonators are still on also. Drone isn't that nuts but on long drives (especially 55-60mph on highway with tow/haul on) you may get aggravated. Not trying to discourage you, just letting you know my reasons. EVERYBODY though has their own opinion on drone noise. I will say the YouTube videos I have heard of fm mufflers interior noises do not really compare to hearing it in person.

If you still decide on the fm40 and haven't done it yet, I'll sell you mine real cheap tomorrow.

Well, you have caused me to do more research. Thank you for that info. I really dont want to regret it later on and be in the same position you are having to replace systems. I dont personally know anyone around here with the set up I want for me to hear in person. So Im having to rely on youtube clips.

I love my 40. With all the quietness of the new cabs its not very loud in the cab. I can't tell you how loud it is out side the cab except that the rumble at idle is awesome, and when I drive through the square down town it sounds like a roaring monster.

Best way I can put this:

If your an old school guy and like the idea of hearing your exhaust constantly, fm 40 for you. City stop and go driving will not be bad because by the time overdrive or MDS kicks in, your already applying the brakes for traffic or stop light/sign. Any driving with a steady cruising speed (highway, backroads) you will have drone. Not overbearing but there. When I'm alone in my truck, this stuff means nothing to me. Radio up a bit, hitting the gas letting it scream, it's awesome! Family gets in= drone lol! Can't really turn up the radio and have 2 kids talk over it.

I'm going to get my magnaflow 18 on in a few hours, I'll update this as soon as I hear it on my truck and let you know the difference.

Roll Tide Ram:

My magnaflow 18 is on. Since you are in the same boat as I was, ditch the fm 40 and go get the Maggie 18. It's perfect! Exact same characteristics as the stock muffler until you hit the gas, that's the only way you will know you even put a muffler on. Perfect for kids in the back seat. I recall my factory muffler having the exact same "drone" sounds as this. Nothing that will make the passengers pissed.

Ibram81, may I ask why you went with the 18" vs the 14"? I'm led to believe that the 14" is slightly more aggressive, but still not anywhere's near the level of the FM40.

I wS concerned with the drone of the 14 and played it safe. MANY more posts of low drone with the 18 rather than the 14. Now that I have heard the 18 in person on my truck I would have gone with the 14 for a bit more rumble. I confirmed today after speaking with mangaflow that the muffler will get a bit louder after the first couple hundred miles or so due to the sound materials in the muffler settling. Guess I will see what it's like then. A bit more bite would be perfect!!! But I'm definitely happy with it.

I used this kit from FLOWMASTER direct fit # 817568 350.00 Amazon, 50 series HD muffler no welding, clamp on. no drone at all. Nice tone to, fits Hemi dual exit pipes.

I've got a 40 series with longtube headers and kept the resonators. There is drone on the highway when I'm in higher gear with low rpms, usually in the 1600-1800 range. Once I get to highway speeds, usually running in the 2000 rpms range, the drone goes away. When I'm cruising on a long road trip, I can't hear my exhaust at all. Step on the gas, though, and the world knows you have flowmasters.
