I just picked up a 2015 Ram 1500 Black Sport on Friday and realized this morning that the air scoops are not functional.

I've seen the Mopar intake kit but was wondering if there were any other options available. I'm thinking this will be my first mod :D

The Mopar one is the only one that uses the Sport hood nostrils as a suck point. IIRC it only uses one of them

Waste of time making functional scoops on the truck. If you don't duct them to the air intake, you're jjust sucking dirt and water into your engine compartment (This is how the "Functional" scoops on my '13 R/T Challenger worked. If you duct them to a CAI system, you just wasted your money because the stock air intake is as good or better than any add-on kit. No increase in power, just a louder sucking sound....some people like that.

The plan would be to purchase and install the whole kit, along with the duct. The sound is cool, but not interested in spending $800+ for a cool noise.

I haven't done much research outside of one video on YouTube, which the dude raved about an increase in HP.

I can find WAY better things to invest in for the truck if that's not the case.

Do yourself a favor and do some more detailed research on this and other RAM forums. I see the subject come up here and on the Charger/Challenger/300 forums and my observation is that 9 out of 10 or more people say that they make no more horse power (in some cases less, when the stock intake was already better than anything you can bolt on), and the most significant thing they do is allow you to hear a louder intake sucking noise (something that some people like to hear).

I've not done one and I'm only relaying what I've read in the past 5+ years I've been following RAM/DODGE/Chrysler forums.

My understanding is that the best bang for your buck for horsepower is a custom tune. All the electronic magic.

And when it comes to horsepower. If you've got 395 in your '15 RAM Sport.....what are you going to do with 10, 15, 20 more? If it were me, I'd put a kick-ass sound system in, or some personalized appearance mod (Lighting, badging, debadging, stripe, wheels, etc....)

I've actually seen your name quite a bit in other threads about this lol. I'm convinced my money is better suited elsewhere.

There's more than enough power and would rather spend money on a more substantial power increase down the road. I think an appearance mod would be better off in starting this journey.

I appreciate your input!

To be honest, youve already got the appearance mod, in the form of the hood scoops. Even if they are just aesthetic. I LOVE the look of the scooped hood.

Youve got a great starting point. In my estimation, those scoops will make anything you do look more aggresive. Tires, steps, etc.

Even if you managed to tweak some HP out of a CAI mod...it's something you really can't tangibly notice. But an appearance mod or a sound system upgrade is something you'd appreciate every day. When I decided to spend some money on my '16 Rebel, I got a black, spray in Rhino lining. Since I don't have a tonneau, this became both a functional bed protector AND an appearance mod. My truck is two-tone Red over Black, and the black inside the bed broke up the massive Red that you used to see, when viewing the truck from above. Also had the silver brush plate in the front sprayed with the same black Rhino lining. So for $600, I got a nice functional bed liner, black bed appearance, and blacked out brush plate, which set my '16 apart from others in my area and something I see and appreciate every time I walk up to the truck.

Definitely a great way to appreciate your truck! Would love to see some photos of the whole truck and the mods done!

Don't have any photos of the black bed liner, but here's a before and some after of the Rhino-lined brush plate. Also had the license plate holder holes filled and got that dumb thing off. Last photo is Black Gorilla Nuts. Much better than the stock chrome-capped rust catchers that came on it.

Looks awesome man! Those nuts are also on the list. The black paint is mostly stripped on mine. It's the small details that count ;)

Another option for those cool hood scoops: lights!

I've seen them in person but only on a couple trucks and one Challenger. Around here they're unique enough to really stand out. One owner bought a replacement set of the scoops and modded them so that he could go back to stock if he wanted.

Go over to the Challenger and Charger forums and look for posts from a whacko from Texas named "NUKE" on Challenger Talk and "GertFrobe" on ChargerForum (same dude). He has some extensive posts including photos and videos of light (LED) mods he did on the non-functional scoops on an SXT Challenger. Lots of good lessons learned, folksie humor, and some head scratching seat-of-the-pants engineering.
