Anyone know how the different axle ratios effect gas mileage?
I'm picking up my new ram tomorrow and am very excited.
I didn't plan on getting a 3.92 but the truck I'm buying has it. Just wondering how it will effect my gas mileage if at all.

I have 3.92s and I'm getting 21-23 mpg on the highway and 17-18 mpg in 50/50 city/highway driving. I drive with a pretty light foot and my city driving isn't too congested.

Because the 8 speed has so many gears and covers such a wide range I don't think you pay much of a mileage penalty for going with the 3.92s.

Honesty, unless your really sensitive about squeezing out an extra half mpg, in my opinion the 3.92s are the way to go. It feels REALLY strong and drives great.

I will caution you though. There is one major draw back to the 3.92s. Your face will cramp up from smiling too much.

Between my truck (3.21) and my friends (3.92) I'm getting 1-2 mpg better. I'm also a long box CC to his regular cab express with a topper. City driving I never see the Mpg listed above, 15-16 max. My trips to TN have only been 19-20 too.

Also my numbers are calculated not the trucks very opptomistic read out.

That's reassuring. Most of my driving is highway. Sometimes stop and go. I get about 14-15 mpg now in my Lincoln Aviator. So that's a huge improvement. I like the idea of feeling more power. :smiley_thumbs_up:

Only got 2 recorded fuel ups going on my 3rd..

my hand calc is at 17mpg on the dot with a mix of city and highway... been having a heavy foot though as ive been getting impatient driving in traffic... i'd say a good chunk goes into stop and go traffic right now....

i got the 3.92 CC long box with the 121L tank...

Ive drove my dads which has the 3.55 and didn't feel much or any of a difference.. fuel wise theres very little difference other then he has a much lighter foot

You will not go wrong with 3:92, Actually there is a dealer in my immediate area that will give you more on a trade in if you have a 6 speed with 3:92, The 8 speed is also good with 3:92. There is a dealer north of me who will carry 6 speed 3:92 more than the 8 speed. This gear ratio is the favorite for those who want to tow with there truck.

You may see 1-2 MPG at the most, with the 8 speed the 3.21s are far from anemic though, and it will tow up to about 8000. I've unintentionally spun my tires on dry pavement before and I have LSD.

I typically see 18-18.5 average, and have seen 23 highway. I can consistently get over 21 on the highway, I visited family in Kansas a few months ago and got 21.5 despite the stiff headwinds.

Only got 600 miles on my truck so still breaking in. I got 19.8 on my first road trip, getting about 15-16 around town, however, I'm not taking it easy and there is lots of traffic. I don't think there's much of a penalty for the 3.92 axle. There is however a plus for the grin factor as this thing scoots.
