I'm not sure exactly what cost would be. You can find the parts at parts.mopar.com
It looks like it would probably run you almost $200 for all the parts, then installation if you wanted to pay for it. If you do a search on here I know there is a discussion about the upper glove box. There are people that have pulled the parts out of wrecked Big Horns and SLTs at wrecking yards. That would be your cheapest option for sure.
You could also check ebay for the parts. Every now and then you might find a seller on ebay that has pulled the parts out of a wrecked SLT or can pull the parts out of one for you and sell them to you

Or you trade it up for a Sport. For an extra $10K, you get the glove box lid. :D

I priced out the upper glove box door, glove box housing and the latch striker and it was too much to do new.

I found a salvage yard while looking for my EVIC cluster that had the upper glove box in the same vehicle and made him an offer of $60 complete including the striker.

The installation was very easy although I had to find screws at the hardware store since I did not specify that they send the them.

My wife likes the open compartment. I don't sit over there enough to say if I do or not.
Yeah, it kind of points out how different folks will look at this differently. I like that I can reach over there from the drivers seat and grab a sunglasses case or whatever has been placed in that cubbyhole without having to work a latch or door. It's angled well enough that stuff stays in there even while you're having some fun in tight corners...LOL! It's great that there's an option for those like the door.

You are correct as far a usefulness. I used the cubbyhole much more than I do now with the door because of ease of use and because it is a much smaller space now. I still prefer the look of the complete dash vs the hole.

Now I am on the lookout for a center seat with the underseat storage so I regain my lost storage area. Go figure.
