Is it worth the money to upgrade from the 5.7L to the 6.4L on the 2500?

  • Yes, I think it is.

Looking at trading my 2014 Crew Cab Big Horn 4x4 5.7L for a for the same truck, but a 2015 with a 6.4L. Just wanted some opinions on the engine. I plan on getting the exact same truck (cloth buckets, nav screen, heated steering wheel/seats, 7in EVIC, etc), but with the 6.4L instead of the 5.7L this time around. I pull trailers everyday all day long, but they're lighter weight. I mainly have a 2500 because we do a bunch of snow removal, otherwise I could honestly get buy with a 1500. Didn't know if the extra power or even fuel mileage would be worth the extra $1500. What's everyone think? Plan on ordering in the next couple weeks.

Even with your criteria, I would still get the 6.4 since it's was re-designed to work in a heavy duty truck capacity environment.

I had a 2005 QC 2500 4x4 5.7 w/ 4.10 gear. While I the 5.7 is a great engine I always thought the 2500 needed more power. Granted the newer 5.7 is much improved as far as HP and torque. I think I would still want the 6.4

Two things might change my opinion. If the 5.7 had MDS. The second would be if the 5.7, in the 2500, had significantly better gas mileage than the 6.4. From all I've seen the 6.4 is getting about the same MPG as I got with the 5.7. 13-15 in town and 16-17 highway. 8-10 towing 7K depending upon how many hills I encounter

I've grown to like MDS. I can not tell, except the ECO light, when it might be kicking in or off. If I want MDS off I can always select the tow/haul mode

That's going to be a huge hit. You see that all the time on here. I guess in 3 to 6 months we will see people trading in a 15 for a 15. Good luck on your new truck.

Yikes, a dealerships dream, an owners nightmare. I would try to sell it outright, otherwise you`ll take a HUGE hit. As for the thought of trading, you should have bought the 2500 with the 6.4 to start with, for what you`re doing. Another way to do it, drive the one you have for a few years, THEN trade up to a new one. If you dont, and you trade it in, you`ll definitely be up side down on your loan. If the money end of it dosent bother you, by all meens, dive in...!

Keep in mind, the 6.4 dosen`t make THAT much more power than the 5.7

ECO mode does not mean MDS is active. You can be in ECO mode and MDS may not be active.

You dont need to use TOW/HAUL mode to shut off the MDS,
just hit the "+/-" (-) gear selector on the shifter, it will shut the MDS off.
Ther is no reason to even use the TOW/HAUL mode unless you`re towing.

I traded my 2013 1500 with 3:92 gears and the 5.7 for a 2014 2500 with 3:73 gears and the 6.4. Best trade ever. I only wish I had ordered the 4:10 gears. I get better mileage and it will pull a lot more. My 6.4 has the smoothest drivetrain I have ever had in a truck.

I also pull my 13,000 pound 5th wheel with almost no effort, in Colorado!

If you can afford it, go for it.
