So all was fine up until I applied the second coat of my first color.
Yes, I cleaned it
Yes, I sanded it
Yes, I cleaned it again after sanding

I have no idea why this one area is being weird on me, but it is.
I need to know how to advance from here.
Do I clean this off and start again? If so, how do I clean the paint off?
Or is there a trick to even this out?

Thanks for any and all help!

I think, and it has been a while since I painted the Hemi engine cover, you have applied to much paint on that pass.

Not sure. Maybe held the can to close to the cover?

Unfortunately I do not know how to fix that besides starting over again. Did you use a primer? I used a primer that is supposed to adhere to plastic.

I remember with the Vararam cover I did I had to do it twice before it came out just right. I think I got lucky with the engine cover.

What paint are you using? Looks like your spray distance is too close and applying too heavy of an coat. Let it dry for 24hrs, and sand it smooth with some 320(if the paint dont start peeling as it is drying)and repaint and try using lighter coats so it wont sag again. You should be able so save what you have.

That could very well be. Although this isn't rocket science, I still find myself like a kid in a candy store when working on something for my truck and get a little overexcited at times.

I am so willing to start over.. if not to just get this crappy look off and return to step 1.

I was told I didn't need a primer. (Was also told I didn't need VHT, that regular Krylon would work fine due to the cover not getting very hot during operation)

If I need primer, I will get Primer. AutoZone ain't far from me.

How do I remove this?? Do I need to pick up something else while in town?

It is not beyond the realm of possibility that I applied to heavy. However, the rest of the cover looks superb.. it's just that one spot that's all jacked. As for waiting and sanding.. I think I would prefer to just remove these two coats and start over.

Brake parts cleaner and a scotchbright pad works well for me on removing paint from plastics and will remove any oils in the plastic as well

So my shopping list consists of primer (1 can should do it, yes?), some brake cleaner solution (am I looking for a bottle? Never bought the stuff before and don't know what to look for) and a scotch bright pad.

Do I need anything else to ensure my second attempt is my last?

Brake parts cleaner will be in a spray can and I rather use adhesion promoter on plastics than primer which will be in the paint section as well at the parts store. Was you going to put clearcoat on after painting? If so make sure its the same brand of your paint.

Good Luck and try to have fun with it!!

Ah.. so adhesion promoter then.. not primer?

Yes, I have a can of VHT clear coat for the finishing touches (whenever I get to that point)

I am trying to have fun.. but in all honesty, my mood was immediately soured upon seeing this issue after waiting the 10 min for the coat to set. Trying hard to follow directions so as to avoid problems like this and yet I still encounter the problems. *sigh*

Thanks for the help guys..

Back to AutoZone I go...

Whoa yeah that is my fault.

I mean't adhesion promoter as well. Just so used to saying primer since that is what usually goes on first before the paint.

Painting is fun. Half the fun is messing up and getting to do it over.

I agree with this statement! :D

I also agree with what the guys are suggesting, especially when you're willing to start from scratch. Otherwise I would have suggested sanding that area down and taking it easy. Multiple light(er) coats are sometimes better than a couple heavy ones, trust me!

Good luck and enjoy. You'll get 'er done right Kai.

Ok. back from Auto Zone a bit ago.

Grabbed brake cleaner and a scotch bright pad - used these to clean the paint off. Damn if it didn't create a terrible paint run all over the blasted place. I spent a good ten minutes trying to clean all the streaks up until reality interrupted my OCD and I realized that, duh dumb a$$.. you're going to paint over this. lol

Grabbed DupliColor adhesion promoter, which also doubles as a primer.. meant for plastic surfaces. Yay! Used some DupliColor prep wipes to clean it up first, then applied 3 light coats of the promoter/primer.

Taped off my ripple section, again.. just finished the first light coat of my silver/gray VHT.

Here's hoping everything goes better this second time around. I know the saying says that charm appears after the third attempt.. but I am not in the mood for a 3rd. lol

Patience is a virtue of which I am grasping by the horns at the moment.

Thanks again, everyone for your input. Sleep well tonight knowing that you prevented a brunette bomb from erupting in the southeast Utah today.

Okay.. another quick question..

Once I am done with this section and this color. How long do I have to wait before this fresh paint is able to withstand tape while I tape off the next section?

It's looking GREAT right now and I DO NOT want to ruin it by acting too fast.. but I also don't want this project to take a week.. I don't think it should anyway..

Um. My advice would be let it sit over night. Let it settle and cure.

With your OCD, like mine, think of this as a work of art and take your time as well as giving time.

Well put. Good point.

I plan to do two more colors.. so given how much I can tape at once.. hopefully I can have this done by Sat night then.

Kai, sorry you ran into trouble with those paint runs. Seems like everyone has you pointed in the right direction though. Like stated above, I too let mine set over night in between colors/tapings. Also, since it is possible that your first couple coats of the silver went on a little heavy, I would be extra careful when removing the tape as to not have the paint possibly start to peel.

It was frustrating. I must plead guilty to having had some very vulgar language escape my mouth. But yes, I am on the correct path now and am feeling much more confident (before I would describe myself as having felt 'know-it-all").

I will certainly be allowing each color to set overnight. Not going to be a Speedy Gonzales. My tape should remove just fine now that I am being extremely light with my coats this second time around. ;) But thanks for the tip!

When I did mine it was plastic adhesion promoter, primer sealer, 2 medium coats of basecoat, then I sanded off the lettering since I wanted them to stay black, then clearcoat. Takes a lot of patience that's for sure. Got any pics yet?

Pics? We got pics!
Been posting them on my build thread, but I can toss 'em up here too :)

After the second attempt on the silver...

Black done...

Red sides done...

The aftermath of what was nearly a three hour taping session...

and as it sits right now... almost ready to remove the hundreds of tape shards and slivers with tweezers.. once that is done, I can finish up with a clear coat protective finish and call it done...

Looking forward to seeing this completed. Looking good so far. Of course now you have me considering doing this too.
