I'm a "new" ram owner as of yesterday - 2001 with the V6 standard cab, automatic, RWD.


How do I know if I have a towing package? I don't have a receiver at the back, but do have a trans cooler.

On the center of the dash at the bottom, under the radio and screen you should see the brake assist for the trailer.

OK - I don't see that so no towing package. I'm guessing the trans cooler is a standard item? It's nice to see that on the truck - at least I'm not planning on towing much past 1500lbs.

Don't go by that nessisarrily, I have a factory tow package in my truck, but didn't have a Factory Brake Controller. But two items that will be there for the Factory tow package is Class IV receiver hitch and the the Auxillary Cooler,

My 99 has the tow package, but didn't have the brake controller. However, it was wired for one, so installing a Prodigy P3 with an adapter cable was plug and play. Mine also had the 7 pin trailer connector.

If your truck has the tow package, it should be wired for a brake controller. The pigtail and connector should be up under the dash on the drivers side.
