hi , i have a 2006 dodge ram 1500 4x4 quad cab 5.7 hemi. i also have the heavey duty package. i need to replace my front struts and was wondering if this is hard to do . also my front shock has a coil spring with it and do you need a coil clamp to change the strut to compress the coil to take out strut ? is it required that you change the coil spring wnen replacing front struts or can you just replace the shock ? any help with this would be gratly appreciated . thank-you

I'm not familiar with the "heavy duty" package but I would assume it's something along the lines of stiffer shocks and springs. I haven't done this yet but I have done a lot of research because I am getting ready to replace my front shocks with Bilstein 5100s. From what I have seen the job isn't too hard and will probably take an average of 2-3 hours depending on how mechanically inclined you are. You do have to have a coil spring compressor...not to get the strut assembly out, but to remove the existing coil spring and other components that you will reuse and to reinstall them onto the new shock/strut. Wall mounted compressors work best and are safest but people have used the standard hand held compressors. You do not have to replace your existing coil spring.

What shocks are you going with? Are you familiar with or have you considered the Bilstein 5100 ride height adjustables?

Hardest thing about replacing mine was the seized lower strut bolts on both sides. The driver side was really bad & we screwed up the lower control arm strut bushing by using too much heat.

hello, i was going to go with factory struts from the dealer. i was told that when your truck has the heavy duty package it also refers to having heavy duty struts which from the dealer cost about 225.00 dollars each plus tax . i have not done to much research on struts but are those blistein struts better that factory ones ? when you change the strut does the spring come out also or does it stay in place with that coil clamp and strut slides out ?

has anyone ever herd of BDS shocks or Skyjacker shocks ? are they any good or better than factory shocks .also i just found out i have front shocks on my truck not struts . i have front coil over shocks and rear leafs

Bilstein, BDS, and Skyjacker all make excellent aftermarket shocks but I don't know how they would compare to a stock "heavy-duty" shock. Everyone that has them seems to like the ride of the Bilstein 5100s and to the best of my knowledge they are the only front leveling shock out there. I'm not certain as I haven't done mine yet but I believe you unbolt the entire shock/spring coilover assembly and remove it from the truck. Then you remove the spring from the factory shock, put whatever you are reusing back, and reinstall.

Yes the whole coil over/strut assembly will drop in one piece.

I did Rancho's quick lifts w/Rancho 9000's

great info , i just was on the phone with a bilstein shock tech about which shock of theres that they make will be better than my factory stock ones. they said for me to go with the bilstein 4600 shock because that will leave my truck just like stock . bilstein did say that the 5100 shock would also work but they got into this height thing as if i were to raise my truck which i didnt want to do . almost like as if someone puts a lift on there truck i guess? from what i had read everyone loves the 5100 shock but i decided to go with the 4600 shock . if anyone has info on the 4600 bilstein shock pipe in i would like to know your opinion before i put them on the front of my truck

I can tell ya a seized lower bolt will cost you. I'm getting the lower control arm replaced tomorrow cause we screwed up the strut bushing :(

wow that stinks 06 bighorn ! do you have an extended warrenty on your truck i think that would cover that . last nite when i ordered my bilstein 4600 front shocks from a local dealer jannetty racing i had to find out which 4600 series shock i had for my truck. because there are 4 different types that could of gone on my truck by the way the shocks mounted to my truck . i couldnt find that info out because the dealer was closed and my truck is not home. i guess all the 4600 series shocks mount the same way to the top of the fenderwall were the shocks are different is were they mount to the aframe . 1 of the shocks is shaped like a u on the bottom were it mounts to aframe. the other 3 are inserted into a u mount built into aframe. this morning i have to go and see which one i have .

The tops when assembled will look similar to this



the 3 smaller bolts mount the unit, the center one holds down the cap & compressed spring. The lower mount should be u shaped at the end of the strut.

yes, that is correct the bottom of my shock is u shaped. have you herd of any reviews on the bilstein 4600 series shocks . are they as good as the 5100 series ?

I was wondering if I can swap out my stock front struts for the Bilstein 5100 adjustables with the u-shaped bottom bracket? Can I just swap them straight across or do I have replace the struts with other struts?
