Somewhat individual and indeterminate

You can change the OEM oil after any 1000 mile interval as you like with your pet brand of oil. You could change the OIL FILTER every 500 miles (if you like) during what might be considered "break in" if you want to leave the OEM oil in for a little longer.

While there is nothing wrong with conventional oil (except perhaps in desert racing) - synthetic oils and GOOD oil filters are the typical current paradigm.

After reading all the oil analysis's at bobistheoilguy.com I'm now a firm believer in extended oiled change intervals. I'm just going to follow the Ram's oil life monitor which I understand will probably have me doing them about every 8,000 miles.

With that being said I do believe in an early first change. You will definitely have much higher levels of wear metals in your oil during break in. I think it's just cheap insurance to do one early. I plan to do mine this weekend at 500 miles.

Another reason for me to do one early is so I can get a better filter in there. My hemi has the startup tick/knock noise. This is probably due to an inferior anti drain back valve in the oil filter. I run wix filters in my 2012 Grand Cherokee Hemi and have never had the startup tick/knock.

As for oil I usually run Penzoil Platinum or Ultra. I like the extra cushion it gives me when running longer oil change intervals and also it has much better low temperature flow characteristics than dino. Here in Michigan on a -10 degree morning you can certainly hear the difference between starting up a vehicle with dino vs synthetic.

Did the first oil change in my '13 Sport at roughly 13,500 km as indicated by my oil life monitor and using conventional oil....second oil change pretty much similar mileage again per oil life monitor...approaching 3rd change now and looks like it might be going even a bit longer this time.

I am waiting on my oil life monitor to signal me to perform the maintenance this time around. I used to be a 500 mile then every 5000 mile kinda guy, but nowadays, the synthetics are pretty impressive with staying clean. I will be using Pennzoil Platinum Ultra Synthetic with Mopar oil filters.

Good decisions EVERYBODY!

No one (well I guess there could be somebody:smileup:) will ever regret paying attention to the quality and filtration of your engine oil.

Truth is, while there are differences among synthetics, if you just adhere to a reasonable oil change situation (no black as tar stuff) - you'll be fine.

Does everyone recycle oil and filters?

Change the filter at least

For that whole unending "break-in" debate, the simple expedient of changing the OIL FILTER, is sufficient to capture particles.
The OEM oil is probably OK for at least a few thousand miles -- even though that's a little over generalized and unqualified.

In a severe wear test study that can be found at: http://speedtalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=30483 Tests were run at a real world oil temperature of 230 degrees F. The Pennzoil Platinum Ultra 5W-30 took the top honors failing at 115,600 psi pressure. 5W-20 did not do as well failing at 86,270 psi. (Both Pennzoils were the previous version not the new ones. Hopefully the new ones are even better) Mobil 5W-20 and 0W-20 both failed around 95,000 psi. Would not hesitate to use either one of these two brands of Synthetic motor oils. Castrol Edge and Quaker State Ultimate also did very well. The expensive Royal Purple synthetics did not fare well at all on this wear test.

Yeah, I changed the first time at 5k or so. Second time at 7k (12k total miles), and now I'm at 19,500 and debating when to change the oil. Probably have it done next week.

I don't worry about synthetics. I've used it in the past, but seriously, I've never notice FE difference or had an oil related engine issue with conventional oil. I doubt I'll keep this truck long enough to worry about it.

Did mine at 2500 miles. I had some trouble getting the filter off. It sure was tight, band wrench just bent it up. Finally got it off with a Harley Davidson oil filter wrench that fits onto the bottom. Put Royal Purple oil and filter in it.

My first oil change was around the 1500 mile mark. 5.7L now has 1985 miles!

5Qts M1 AFE 0W-20 & 2Qts M1 HM 5W-20 w/Fram Ultra {Synthetic} Filter.

This will take me into next spring! Thinking about switching to Amsoil SS 5W-20 with 1 year OCI.

At the 10K mile mark I will drain the Rearend Gear Oil and add a PML Cover that has a drain and fill plug for 10 min gear oil changes. Plus help with some cooling.
