If you have 2 working FOBs, you can program a 3rd yourself
If you only have 1 FOB & no 2nd FOB, you can buy a New FOB from
IKEYLESS website
Then take it to a dealership to program it in

Because IKEYLESS charges so little, buy 2

If you buy a FOB through the dealership instead, remember that the dealership Parts Dept., has 2 identical FOBs, one reads Dodge on it, the other reads RAM
The one that reads DODGE is less costly

How does one 'initialize' a new key fob ? I have seen that if you have a working one you can copy it. My old one just has 'flaky' buttons... so how do I copy it ?

Take the fob aparts and clean the inside of the buttons and where the battery makes contact...be careful because the little prongs for the battery are flimsy. I have had to do this 2-3 times a years from the day I bought it.

I didn't know this, do you have a link with instructions?

Butter - I had it apart and yesseree you have to be really careful. The oxidation is so bad on the contacts - very difficult to remove while holding onto it. Also have been trying to find the mystery answer on how to program your own, if you have two (I'm also trying to figure out what having two has to do with it).

When I bought my ‘04 2500 nearly 7 years ago, there was only one key and separate fob that came with the truck. I bought a second fob off EBay (<$10 IIRC) and programmed it as described in the Owner’s Manual. Fortunately (in this situation), my key is NOT chipped (no “Sentry Key anti-theft security system) so I just had a couple of extra keys cut at my local hardware store. For less than $15 I was good to go!
Bottom line, if the vehicle has the Sentry Key security system i.e. a “chipped” key, 2 original keys are required to DIY program an additional key. If not Sentry Key equipped, only one remote/fob is required to program additional fobs. I’m not sure if newer (than 2004) models are ALL equipped with the Sentry Key system or if it remains an option. I’d check that out first before investing in programmable keys and/or locksmith/dealer services.
