My cupholder is broken at the hinge and i believe this is a common problem. I searched for a bit but I didnt find a fix for the problem. Does anyone know of one?? I would rather not have to buy a new cup holder and Im not a fan of aftermarket cupholders in my truck either.

salvage yards,, you might find one there. I found one fo my 98 that way. They are like 65 bucks on ebay someimes

I'm getting the impression that you're similar to me and anal on certain things. The aftermarket cup holder was the tip-off...so the cable fix in the Do You Think This Will Hold A Big Gulp (paraphrase) thread just won't do.
Do you have any pictures of it? I worked in scrap/salvage/recycling/junk yards for years and they always came in broken. I think we had one that came in that wasn't and the owner had me pull it so he had a spare.
In any event...if it's just cracked at the lower hinge I've repaired a few of them (and glove boxes) with a technique I devised for plastic welding.

RF, I wasn't saying anything bad about your suggestion, so please don't take offense to it. :box: Yes I saw it and it is a viable option, I just got the impression from his post that it wasn't for him. That's all.
But what I usually do, believe it or not, coffee stirrers. :thk: Get a stack of 'me and get it set the way you want it. Light the end of it and let it burn. when it starts to drip make sure it's where you want it and keep it going.
It'll repair it from behind and isn't noticeable.

I'd say it's more from use than getting dry and breaking, but lubing it couldn't hurt. The first thing that comes to mind is dielectric grease.
I'll have to take a pic and post it, but mine is broken on the lower hindge. This only issue with your "weld" would be I dont have all the pieces. I bought the truck and it was broken.
I myself was thinking about making something work with a black nylon strap or even a black shoe string instead of the wire on that thread. I think it you used some black screws or hide the screws it would look much better. Warlock is right, I dont like things to look cobbled. I dont mind if they are, I just dont want anyone to see it!

The only thing I can think of if the pieces are gone is to remove it and try to cut some out of cardboard or sturdy paper to use as a pattern. Then possibly go to a good hobby shop (RC cars, airplanes, boats, etc...) and ask them the best way to fix it.
With the cost of some of those "toys" I'd think they get damaged and they have a solution to fixing them. Since it's plastic, they very well may have a solution.
I'm interested in seeing what they might have to say.
(ramfam...I think I'd prefer a cup holder with a lower center of gravity...driving the Manual Trans and morning coffee is always an interesting en devour)

Guess I just got lucky in my '98. Had a 130lb coonhound land on it more than once, never broke.
I HATE the one in my '96. Who's half-baked idea was that one????

I had a bird dog once but had to get rid of him. Damn thing didn't know how to fly!?

I lubed all the pivot points on the cupholder in my '98 Ram this weekend and it works slick and quiet as can be now. Folds down and the adjustable "grippers" work too. Just used WD-40....know that does not last a long time but it's all I had handy.
Hope it lasts a while!
I did look at the link to those armrest console mounted ones, and they are sure sharp! May have to order one after I'm done with everything else on the Ram. Looks a lot more spill-proof than the dash holder.

Umm, WD-40 probably won't last that long and I would wonder how it will affect plastic being a petroleum product. I like to use a graphite lube on plastics myself.
