I was just looking around at best buy today and was talking to the installer there about what to put in my regular cab 2001 ram. He said to get a Kicker DX250 amp and either a loaded Kicker box with a 10" sub in it or for like $15 more I could get a Kicker Comp12" sub and a box for it that I would have to put sub in myself. He also said the easiest way to wire up was a Kicker kit with a 8AWG power wire. I figured for the little bit more it would deffinately be worth getting the 12". But since I'm new to audio I wanted to see what everyone thinks of this setup.

Kicker subs are my personal favorite. The setup you described is not bad at and and the install is so easy a caveman can do it. A single sub is good, but dual subs is better. As far as an amp, kicker is a mid-range brand and I would go for something with higher quality such as an Orion amp. You can get quality amp kits extremely cheap and as long as you keep the RCA cable away from your power wire your bass will sound clean. Yeah pics would deffinately be helpful. I've been trying to figure out where to run all the wires thru the truck, any help? Idk what your truck is but mine is a regular cab if that makes a difference to you.

Do yourself a favor and run a smaller gauge(bigger power) power wire, 8ga honestly is small, I would go for a 4ga amp install kit for several reasons, one if you ever go bigger amp more subs you will need it anyways, also its easier on the electrical system. NOW that being said, I would also go for a amp that is 2ohm stable and not 1ohm, a 2ohm amp sub setup is easier on electrical and less drain. The new alpine amp, the digital ones are 2ohm or 4ohm stable and create same rms at 2 or 4ohm unlike traditional amps....Pasting links to the amps im talking about

It would be better to find kicker comp D4 12" and if you have only 1 sub with one of these amps above you can run it all at 4ohm

I get what your saying about the power wire. After that though I don't really know what your talking about, I'm that new to audio. Any help or links you provide so I can understand better?

Its hard for me to explain lol. Pick out the subs you want and either pm me or start a new thread and we can walk you through what you need amp wise, power wire wise. Whats your budget for everything? And what are you wanting to acomplish? Waking neighbors down the road bass??

Any amp that is 1 ohm stable is 2 ohm stable. I'm more of a fan of Rockford fosgate amps, they are probably the most electrically efficient of the major best buy type brands.

The CVRs are great subs as well very versatile. The premise kicker boxes are good, but if you have any carpentry skills at all (I'm talking glue and screws and measurements) build your own box. You can tune the box better to the style of music you listen to for better sound. I can help you with the design of you go that route.


You could also look into L5s. Those are the mid line between CVRs and L7 and can be both tamed for easy listening and cranked on for waking the neighbors. I wish my L7s ha more of a listening ability....but it's fun shaking my friends rear view mirrors of the cars next to me when they piss me off

X2 on the power wire kit though. I wouldn't feel safe with less than 2G honestly. I run 2G to my component amps and they are barely pulling 300W. Anything 1000W+ need run(s) of 1/0 or 2/0 depending on power level, but you don't even need to think that high of your talking single or smaller dual sub setup

The only issue with using a 1ohm amp running at 2ohms is half rms basically, thats why i was recommending if he can afford it alpines or JLs digital series, way less draw and more efficent at recommeded rms, plus smalllllllll foot print. If all he is wanting is cheap system to get it done, than any amp/sub combo would work

Well if thats the case almost anything will do and will be a lot better than stock stereo setup, honestly you can make anything sound decent with a good built box and correct rms running the sub
