So I went to take the jack out from under the front passenger seat to use the tire iron. The jack and tire iron are held down by a wing bolt. Once this wing bolt is removed I seen light. Seems like a crappy design. The bolt sticks out thru the underside and the floor is like a 1/4" thick. Will the threads provide a good enough seal? Seems like this could get rusted and could be hard to remove the jack in the future. Has this ever been an issue?

I was thinking of getting a cheap used spare 35" tire to mount under the box but I don't think it's going to fit. Would I have any issues running the stock spare if one of my 35" tires gets a flat?

I crawled under my truck and applied some RTV black silicone to mine. If i have to unscrew the jack to use it, the silicone will just peel right off. Silicone will seal it up as well as keep it from getting rusted.

I put anti-seize on mine,but i kinda like the silicone idea too:smileup:
Yup, i tried anti-seize quite a few times years ago, it didnt hold up, been using silicone ever since, the hold down stud has never rusted on any truck i`ve put the silicone on. Have had to use my jack in the past a couple times, the hold down stud spun right off super easy. No sign of any rusting, not even flash rust. Once i put the jack back in and got home, i slapped some black RTV silicone right back on... sealed up nice for the next time. Dont use a hard cure silicone like gasket maker, or you`ll have a hard time turning the hold down stud all the way out. I used permatex brand black RTV silicone, the softer black sealant type. I`ll post a link in here for the one i use. Make sure its the Permatex Black Silicone Adhesive Sealant.

LOL,there's always lots of RTV silicone at my place.
Duct Tape/Baling Wire and Silicone, the main essentials of any garage;)
Think i'm gonna take your advice and put some on my jack hold down later today.
Thanks that's a good tip:smileup:

I've been thinking about this too....

If you put a thin coating of Vaseline on the bolt threads... that put a BIG blob of RTV under the truck from the bottom... you can build a rubber pocket around it. (the Vaseline will keep it from sticking to the bolt threads)

Common' guys, a lot of trucks have been this way for 40 years with no problems, including all the 3rd Gen Dodges and every GM work truck I've had in the last 15. Don't over think things.

Over thinking...???? Wowww dude, really...?!?! Apparently you dont have salted roads in the winter to contend with, that rot these trucks out real quick. My last (a $50,000 RAM) truck (a 2010) had to have the box repaired twice for rust thru just ahead of the tail gate in the bed where the seams are spot welded together. The first time it rotted thru, it was ONLY 2yrs old, the second time was 2yrs later, just before i traded it in. If we can protect our trucks with a little help with silicone here and there, i surely dont consider it over thinking. If anything, its under thinking that gets you into more trouble than over thinking.

Think I will try the ol' condom zip tie method and then silicone. Imagine the look on a mechanics face if they saw that. Haha :gy:

I live in the Prairies in Canada, our roads are covered in snow and salt from October until May. Maybe undercoating would have saved your 2010 from rotting prematurely or just that these trucks have the worst paint I've ever seen. Probably the latter.

We just finished melting the last of our 6" dump of snow from the previous week and I'm surprised they didn't do a bunch of salt already. The leaves haven't even started changing colour for sh*t's sake. I'm not worried about 1 screw hole in the bottom of the truck when there are hundreds of more serious rust locations.

hahah no shit, you have legit concerns. I have a friend in Edmonton and another in Calgary. They both have reported snow already, like you said a couple of weeks ago. I like winter/snow but that's too much for me.

I can`t disagree with you about the paint on these ram trucks, i have yet to see one with a decent paint job. Mass produced, and no quality is the problem. Ram isnt the only one, they`re all shit today as far as paint quality. The metal is thinner, rust`s faster, all for the sake of lighter weight to save mpg`s.
