Can anyone with solid knowledge of automotive electrical answer this with confidence?

I want to install new LED footwell lights, and have them operate on both the existing courtesy lights and a switch to turn them on with the doors closed. I know it can be done with a 3-way switch, but I can not find a 3-way switch that meets my criteria for looks. The question is this: can I hook both the courtesy light power AND switched power to the LEDs? I'm concerned that the switched power would 'backfeed' into the courtesy light system and burn/short something out. Am I right about this, or does the vehicle's electrical system prevent this?

Place a diode on the courtesy light wire to prevent back feed from the switched 12V.
