I'm asking for a buddy, I drive a 1500 because I knew milage would be lousy on a Cummins used as a daily driver. Is there anything that can be done on a 3500 dually 6.7 to improve without voiding warranty and be able to pass Illinois emission test?
Considering the pressure the manufacturers are under to increase MPG if there were any add-on's that really worked, they would install it as part of the build. Outside of paying attention to your right foot pressure, proper tire inflation, proper and timely maintenance and not driving around with a lot of unnecessary weight nothing much can be done.
Yep, your buddy is pretty much out of luck. Assuming its a '12 or older, nothing short of deletes will make a significant increase in MPGs. If is a '13 or '14 deletes are not available. There are some tuners available that claim to help MPGs but the return on investment sucks.
I'd love to own a Cummins, just don't think they are very practical as an everyday driver. Most of my friends with them complain how expensive they are to drive. One friend had a vp44 pump fail on his 2001 24 valve 5.9. Mighty expensive repair. He hired me to tow a bunch of cars and trucks with my Ram fifth wheel while his truck is down. My hemi gets the same mpgs, towing as his Cummins did.
If you do not plan to do much towing or carrying of heavy loads a Cummins is not the platform for you. If on the other hand you do some towing and or carry fairly heavy loads, and use it for daily driving in between, I see no real concern there. As to repair costs, in this day an age of high tec and electronics, regardless of what you drive there are expensive components, that if break are costly to repair.
I disagree with all of you.. I traded in my 2012 Sport on a 10' 2500 Cummins. The truck is my daily driver, and I barely if EVER, tow anything. I've wanted a diesel for years, so I found one and bought it. My truck is deleted and running a 5" TBE plus a RaceMe tuner. The 6.7 Cummins would run all over my Hemi any day. So much power and torque, it is simply amazing! Plus driving around town I get around 15 mpg's. I was lucky to see 13 in my Sport. One day I plan on buying a boat or trailer so the justification of towing is there, just not right now. The 1500 Sport was a very gorgeous truck and I loved it! It's just my passion for diesel's was much greater.
I traded my 2013 1500 big horn hemi 8 spd for a 2014 3500 with a Cummins. .. In the city I was averaging 14 mpg now with my cummins I'm getting 16.5 and it's not even broken in yet...I've heard the older cummins was a fuel pig but the newer ones sure aren't.
I picked up a 14 2500 with 13 miles on it. 3k miles later I am averaging 19 mpg in town. I am doing my first long haul this weekend about 1k miles. I am hoping for mid 20s. Plenty of my friends with v8 trucks cant touch that.
That electronic disconnect from the transfer case to the front drive is supposed to worth 1 MPG. I'm seeing 18.6 average right now in mostly mixed with heavy city and I'm hand calculating next fill to see how close it is. It would be fun to make a run doing just highway miles and check the fuel usage.
I can't get 18-19 MPG with my hemi on the highway! Granted it's usually 75 MPH but you diesel guys are getting that in TOWN! I don't tow anything more than a 12 foot trailer with a zero turn mower but my buddy says with mild mods his F250 gets 24 MPG (no DEF). I average 1500 miles per month working in the oil field so 15 MPG sux!
Therefore I'm looking at diesels very seriously!
