loud whine at startup

Hello everybody! I have a 13 RAM 4x4 with the hemi & 6speed tranny with 4000 miles. I'm experiencing a LOUD whine after startup. Sounds like a tranny or power steering pump that has no oil in it. I hear it the loudest at a cold start. It does quiet down after warm up but never really goes away. The truck doesn't need to be in drive & moving for me to hear the whine but its present then too. It's actually pretty embarassing to have a great looking truck & have it sound like that. Anyhow, is anybody else having that sound? I'm thinking about taking it to the dealer but would like to know beforehand if its a normal thing. Thanks in advance for your input!

@20hemi10 - Great call! Finally got my truck back in this morning. They called & said I need a new oil pump & pick up tube. Only prob is I'm waiting for parts again. Was told at least a few days. At least I have a decent loaner truck this time. I'm also a lil worried that a bad oil pump may have done some engine damage. Maybe not from low pressure, but from the pump sending metal thru the oiling system. It sucks to have to worry about these kind of things with a new truck! Especially since this is my first new vehicle. It's kinda taking my warm & fuzzy feelings away. @rdm1465 - I would love if Chip Foose were to show up & say those sweet lil words to me! That would mean the whining sound was not from a mechanical defect, but from a performance mod, like a supercharger perhaps!

Well a small whine is normal when its really cold. You have to remember that the viscosity changes of the oil dramatically until it warms up. You should hear some of the diesel semi trucks I work on. Its nothing to worry about in my opinion. My 2013 has a small whine when it starts after a couple of seconds/minute it is perfectly fine. Its really thick oil they use in the transmission/differential. The guys in the warm climate will never experience this issue. With the temperatures we are having of course you are going to have issues... Hell my 8.4 nav even flashes. In my bluetec the command screen wont turn on and amplifire till the car is warm.

@pilotalex - If the noise was only there for a few seconds/minute, only when the temp is really cold, believe me I wouldn't think twice about it. The problem is that I hear it for 5-6mins every time I start it. And just to clarify, when I say cold start, I don't mean a start up in cold weather. I mean a start up after the truck has cooled off and no longer at operating temps, as in after it sits for bout 2-3 hrs. And I hear it very loudly even if temp is around 50-60 degrees outside, each and every time I start it up cold. While im aware of the oil viscosity changing, I don't think that's the case here. Since before thanksgiving, I've been starting up different trucks at various dealers and of my neighbors, including the 2 loaner trucks I've been driving, and in varying temps, and I have yet to find one that makes the sound. When I got off work this morning, the outside temp was -11F. When I started up the loaner, the starter gear stayed engaged just a hair too long. Other than that there were no unusual sounds at all.

Hmm,
Well this is my first Ram truck, but driving other trucks and cars each behave different in cold weather. It is strange the issue you are experiencing. Mine also as stated has the whine but its not "loud" and it goes away after seconds minuts. Again it does come back once the car drops the operating temperature, but It has not been something that Im over concerned about.

To be honest I think the dealer is just playing the guessing game with you because its VERY hard to trace down especially from what you describe for a couple of minutes. Oil heats up fast so the issue goes away and no one can hear it by the time it gets to the back. Genrally a whine is an alternator/belt issue, and transmission is another possibility.

Yeah, I'm not sure the dealer is positive about what's wrong. I'm still not sure why they wanted to change the tranny cooler the 1st time I had it in. But this time I made sure that they put in their notes that the noise was coming from underneath, around the bellhousing area. Just as another example of how loud it is- last week i went to the drive thru for lunch, which is about a mile from my shop. The guy could not hear me at the speaker cuz of the noise. I had to shut it off so he could take my order. My 1st thought was a transmission issue. Maybe even torque converter, but I don't know enough about either of those to say for sure. I thought it was an odd coincidence that they are now telling me I need an oil pump/pickup tube, and as stated a few posts back, there was a case opened on December 13 for a faulty oil pump that causes a whining sound. Maybe a bad batch of those made it to some trucks. And I have the type of luck that I would buy the 1 truck out of the 100 on the lot with the faulty pump...

:smileup:Well, once again I picked up my truck. When i started it up, the truck was cold. To my surprise the truck was quiet again! According to the paperwork, they first removed the serpentine belt & removed the bolts to disconnect the torque converter. Then started engine but still heard the the noise. Then they removed the timing cover & oil pan and determined it needed a new oil pump. I'm a lil uncomfortable that they are taking the motor apart already but at least it will still be a warranty thing. Anyways, its fixed now and im happy!

Maybe it was a bad batch of oil pumps? My truck made a wining (zipping sound?) for a few seconds once last winter on one of the coldest mornings after sitting overnight.
Funny thing is I had a new at the time 2003 Dakota 4.7 that used to make the same sound on very cold mornings for a few seconds.

My 2014 Ram is doing this as well. When i start it, it will make a similar noise at idle. And for about 1-2 mins while driving it sounds like I have a supercharger. But, it goes away once the engine warms so I figured it was just the oil having a high viscosity when it's cold out.

I have to take my truck in to have the radio replaced later this week, going to have them take a look while it's there.

Trucked still whined after oil pump replacement

I have the whine issue after cold start. Like others it only happens after a cold start. When it is colder (freezing winter temperature) it seems louder and last longer but still made the noise in warmer weather. This noise goes away as soon as the needle on engine teperature guage shows normal operating temperature. They replaced the oil pump, idler pulley and took the serpentine belt off to isolate the issues.
All of these replacements didnt work. They tore the engine down to the block and didnt see any issues on camshaft, valve train etc. Finally Chrysler authorized a short block replacement (block). Chrysler thinks it could be in the crankshaft. I tried to get the dealership to convince Chrysler that a long block replacement (whole engine) would possibly eliminate any issues as they dont really know where the noise is coming from.
I unfortunately love this truck and its been in the shop over 21 times (none were service work) in the 15 months i have owned it. The sunroof is also being repaired (4th time). It rattles when opened over bumps and when the driver door window is down and I close the door. Apparently there was a bulletin that the back support for the roof seperated away and has to be re-glued. That might eliminate the rattle but I also have an issue with the sunroof not laying flat when it is closed. The rear of the roof is like a spoiler. Sticks up even when it is adjusted down. If you adjust it down to far the sides end up below the roof line. Perhaps the roof metal needs to be pushed up. I even asked the dealer to make me an offer so I can order a new truck but there are a bunch of restrictions on going with a Limited with all the options i want.
Any suggestions on what the issues could be?

A new Short block installed and unfortunately the noise is still there. I believe it got rid of another noise that was there (engine whining). I didnt care about that noise since i couldnt hear it while I was driving.
My other problem is the motor shudders when it comes down from 1000 RPM to idle. It shudders when I creep along in traffic (it is a very minor shudder but wasnt there before engine was replaced). It is easily replicated by revving engine from idle to 2000 RPM and letting it go back to idle. It shudders in the steering wheel and it continues to mildly shudder while it is idling. Anybody have any idea on what this new problem is.
