Purchased my RAM 1500 a couple of months ago and window sticker says it has a 32 gallon gas tank. I've filled up about 4 times and each time I waited until the low fuel warning message displayed. But when I fill up, I have never had to put in more than 26 gallons. Are there really 6 gallons still in the tank when the low fuel warning comes on?

2016 Ram 1500, 32 gallon tank, around 15 mpg. Low fuel light comes on, 40 mile range on display. 25.5 gallons filled the tank. So if the gauge was accurate, I would estimate 3.8 gallons left on empty which is a 56 mile reserve if you could actually use the last drop.
Here is my take on it. They want there to be reserve left when it says empty. Even my 1996 ram 1500 with a 26 gallon tank had 4-6 gallons left on empty, you could drive until the gauge read below empty. The closest I ever got to running that one out was 1.5 gallons left.
A steep incline could you let you run out if the tank gets too low, so they are always going to program it on the safe side. Seems reasonable to me anyway. I'm interested how it would be if there is an update. Currently I can get gas at my convenience when the low fuel indicator comes on.
