That's really weird. I'm pretty sure the factory filter on my Hemi was black; not silver. Mine was on there pretty good but I was able to get it off with a filter wrench (band style).

That filter almost looks like a chrome filter to me. Factory filter is black last time i knew. And if you use a band type filter wrench, stop putting it in the middle of the filter, thats the easiest place to crush it. Push the band wrench all the way to the top where the thicker metal is. 50yrs changing oil filters with a band type filter wrench, and i have never crushed one yet... even on brand new vehicles in every dealership i`ve worked.

I tried a cap style wrench first and crushed the end of the filter. The band wrench that I used started to crush the thickest part of the filter which made me move to the middle. Then I felt like I was going to rip this one off again so I just poked a hole in the bottom, drained the oil out and started working my way around the filter until it was loose enough to come off. I am good to go for at least the next 3 years.

I had the same experience with my truck. Oil was changed at 1500 KM. I crushed it with a band style wrench. I had to stick a screw driver in that made oil leak all over me. I have subsequently changed my oil twice (earlier this week 23,000 KM). I use the larger oil filter and have bought a end cap wrench that I hook to my 3/8 rathchet and extension. Still leaks oil down my arm and I curse that I wont do it again but 7 litres of branded synthetic plus a premium synthetic oil filter (long life) is less than half price of getting dealer to do it.

End cap wrench for me, 3500 miles when I did the first change.... Thankfully no issues. I always cover the frame and steering with a plastic bag to avoid them getting covered in oil.

I use end cap sockets. It is so much better than a strap in most cases.

I don't have a 5.7 but I've seen tight filters in the past. Maybe not as tight as being described here but tight nonetheless. What I have found is if I apply steady heavy pressure they will appear to be stuck but they will very very slowly start to turn. If I try to force them instead, the filter bends/crushes. Heavy steady pressure and wait for it. Hopefully that will apply to these tight filters you all are having problems with.

some filters come through way over tightened and no matter what you do you are going to crush the filter. been a known issue for quite awhile now.
I choose to differ. Placing a nylon strap wrench at the very top of the filter will NEVER crush the filter. The metal on the top ring is way too thick. The body of the filter is thin sheet metal. Don't grab it there. You might crush it!

Cap Wrench

I tried a 76mm cap wrench and it just kept rounding off the fluted end of the filter. Not much room with the electric steering rack. Ended up using a band wrench with a swivel and a long extension with a 3/8 to 1/2" adapter to use my 1/2" drive ratchet. Put the band at the very top of the filter. Should be easier the next time. What a pain in the ass!!!
